Just as setting sun said, once you have the schedule set, mce will come on and record your tv show. That is why there is a mce schedule service that runs in the background.

Providing you aren't one to tweak your services to save on system performance the MCE service runs by default and records when the application frontend is not up.

However, if your computer goes to sleep then it will not record so if you are a power saver there is a caveat.

Or, if I am not mistaken, your HDs go to sleep (even if the computer is not technically asleep)...

I guess that may depend on whether Windows or the bios controls the HD sleeping. I have my hard drives sleep after 30 minutes using the Windows power options but the OS will spin them up when it's time to record. It should be able to do so if the bios puts the drive to sleep but since I don't use the bios to sleep components I can't say for sure.
