Built the PC in 2008, has been pretty darn good since then. Just recently has it been shutting off and crashing but no BSOD. Couple days ago it crashed overnight and hung at the "Starting Windows" with only a spec of the red of the starting animation. Shut it off to restart it and from then on it either crashes with a BSOD Stop 0x0000009c or it just hangs at "Starting Windows."

I will try to burn a copy of UBCD at work today to see if I can get the dump zip to attach...(not entirely sure how to do that)... as well as to see if it will boot into memtest tonight.

Will not boot in any of the following:
Normally; Recovery Mode; Safemode; Original or Burned Win7 Install Disks (have 3 different genuine retail versions; none work).

Will boot into the following:
Seagate Harddrive tools
Memtest (comes back with 0 errors after 8+ passes individually in all slots)

Things I have tried already and failed:
Cleaned out system of dust
Booting from numerous Window 7 installation discs with HDs and without HDs
Swapped HDs out with known working HDs (2 different ones)
Swapped RAM out with known working sticks
Swapped PSU out with known working PSU
Unplugged Quadro Video card and used integrated VGA
Unplugged DVD drive
Reset CMOS; Replaced CMOS battery with used battery will try a new one this evening. (got the starting windows animations to go after doing this but only when HDs were unplugged)

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

Custom build:
Hardware Specs;
CPU; Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor BX80562Q6600 NOT OVERCLOCKED
GPU; NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700
PSU; Rosewill RP550-2 550W ATX12V v2.01 Power Supply
RAM; 3GB; CORSAIR XMS2 1-2GB & 1-1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
HDD; 2 Different hard drives: Boot Drive - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM
;Data Drive - Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s
Mobo; Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2 (I believe it's this one without the DVI interface.)

SOLVED ISSUE: Needed to reset the CMOS by pulling battery out of MOBO and exchanging it for a new one and unplugging PSU for a few minutes...let boot back into Startup Repair from HD, did a System Restore and it's booted ready to rock! I will also be

Thanks for your speedy response...I have tested a known working PSU from another working computer and causes the same issue. Should I try another one from another computer?

Incidentally, you want to burn Memtest86+ to a CD and boot from the CD. Run at least 6 passes

This is still the case even though I have swapped out current sticks with two other working sticks from another computer of the same make and model?

edit: OMG duh, because it could be the dim slots on the MOBO.

Ok will do, I'll let it run overnight so it hits at least 7 passes. Thanks!

Ran 8+ passes with both sticks in both slots came back with 0 errors from Memtest. What I thought was going to be the key with the dimm slots being bad on the MOBO...is not the case. I am going to try a brand new CMOS battery and see if that helps.

I KNOWWWWWWW...it's the only thing left...if the new CMOS battery doesn't work...this looks like the next thing. I haven't found anyways to test the CPU, unless I'm blind, other than plan old troubleshooting, correct?

UPDATE: Pulling the CMOS battery again worked...this time I did not touch anything in the bios and let it go into Startup Repair...it BOOTED!!! So as of right now it is "attempting repairs..." cross my fingers! I AM GOING TO GET A FRESH NEW BATTERY!!

It's almost impossible to test cpu. you're right ... plain old troubleshooting.

startup repair works... nice. From dvd I assume?
I think it doesn't find errors. Because it's a hardware error

WHOOOOO HOOOO! It's booted. No the Startup repair was from the hard drive! I did a system restore and that was it! It's running like a champ! The battery on the MOBO was pretty old and I read if it's older than 3 years it can cause all kinds of crazy crashes! Thanks for the input guys! I love when it's a labor easy and only a $3 fix! Trouble shooting is a PITA, but I'm happy with the outcome!

"startup repair" didn't fix anything.... nothing on disk was malfunctioning.
