I've just replaced a defunct MSI mobo in my sister's Win 7 64bit pc with a Gigabyte Z77x-D3H mobo on which I have installed an Intel Core i3 3220 3.30Ghz Ivy Bridge processor and 8Gb RAM.

Acknowledging the inbuilt graphics capabilities of the mobo and the processor, I would appreciate advice as to whether there would be any benefit installing, also, her old graphics card which is a pci-e x16 NVidia GeForce 9500GT, Model: N95GTEN1GI-A-F. It has 1Gb of GDDR2 memory and a core clock of 550Mhz. It is also self-powered from the slot .

Thanks in advance,
Pedro

Well, if the rules still apply, you can only use 1 or the other, not both.

I just ordered the 3570k and an MSI Z77 board and I`m going with my 2 XFX 9600 GT Alpha Dogs until I can afford the card I want.

I would research the capabilities of your cpu, I`m sure there are plenty of reviews out there.

You have the facts on the 9500 and you know what it can do.

AddRam is correct, use the one that gives you better graphics for what you need. If your using dual monitors or the virtua mvp capabilities of the motheboard it is possible to use both the 9500gt and the integrated gpu.

For reference, I'm running the HD 4000 graphics OC'd and my WEI is 6.7 on both graphics tests. I believe the i3 3220 has the HD 2500 graphics......so it should be a little less than my score. It's not real world tests, but its something to go by.

Following on from what Kelly has said,

Run the Windows 7 WEI test with the CPU's built in HD2500 graphics.
You already have the 9500GT right? Why not install it and run the WEI test again, if it scores better than the HD2500 keep it, if it doesn't then simply un-install it. Job done.

Paul.

As Paul states, testing will give you the answer. But not knowing anything about the graphics on the cpu, I`m gonna bet the 9500 will beat it. Your asking the cpu to do 2 jobs. I don`t care how they built it, it`s gotta be worse.

The clock on the card is 100 MHz slower. So there goes my theory. :sleepy:

Well, using the Intel HD 2500 GPU will definitely give you a lot of benefits even if that GPU turns out to be slower than the Nvidia 9500GT. One is the support for seamless video playback of multiple videos all the way up to 4k (3840 x 2160) resolution. This translates to almost 0 % CPU usage while playing back multiple 4k videos simultaneously. Another is the Intel Quicksync technology which can encode simultaneous videos using the GPU instead of the CPU, and GPU encoding is way faster than even the Core i7-3970X. The catch is to find programs that support Quicksync. Those two features alone would make me use the newer GPU instead of the Nvidia 9500GT IMO and for non gaming perspective.

Many thanks theveterans, Dude & AddRAM,

Your respective, enlightening comments have been most helpful. Without them, whilst I looked at the respective specs my understanding of them wasn't sufficient to have made a valid choice. As my sister is very unlikely to get anywhere near gaming or very graphic intensive applications, I will not bother to install the NVidia 9500GT which, anyway, will ease the load on the 550W PSU.

Pedro
