Will there be a Silverlight 6 (and does it matter)?

Silverlight 5, the most recent — and possibly last — version of Microsoft’s cross-platform browser plug-in, is poised to be released to manufacturing (RTM) before the end of November.

Several of my customer and partner contacts have told me they have heard from their own Microsoft sources over the past couple of weeks that Silverlight 5 is the last version of Silverlight that Microsoft will release. They said they are unsure whether there will be any service packs for it, and they are also not clear on how long Silverlight 5 will be supported by Microsoft.

Silverlight needs to die a slow, horrific death. It RUINED Netflix for me. The stupid thing can't even remember what my computer's ID is on there and generates a new one every single time I try to watch anything on there. So of course, I reach my 6-device limit and can't watch anything else for 24 hours after that. All I have in my room is my PC, no fancy BD-players or PS3's otherwise I'd use one or the other instead. It is retarded and redundant - if people want to rip the feed off of there, they'll figure out how to do it with or without Silverlight (and torrents are easier and quicker anyway, so why they feel they need to have this crap "protecting" the contents they host is beyond my comprehension - I don't speak moron).

Tried contacting Netflix about it, they put me on with some older lady who doesn't know a damn thing about it, she told me to contact M$, did that too - issue still isn't resolved, more than six months later. And yes, I did think to try uninstalling and reinstalling... no dice. All I know is it isn't my PC.

Not ONLY does it do this, it ALSO is extremely hard on my CPU, which I just don't understand. If they feel they need to encrypt their streams THAT much, then they should just pull the Instant Play altogether because this is some BS. If MegaVideo can encrypt their stuff so good you virtually just can't rip it off of there, and do it WITHOUT stressing everyone's CPU's, then why can't M$ and Netflix do the same? All I'm saying.

So yeah, Silervlight: go die! You too, Netflix!

MS Silverlight and Adobe Flash are both on the way out. The new IN is HTML5.

I've never had an issue with Netflix's implementation of Silverlight. It was so much better than when they used the MS Media Player plug-in.

As both a user and developer, I found SL to be quite neat. However, it made development a challenge do to its architecture--wasn't the most friendly.

Certainly, whether there is version 6 or not, both Flash and SL are going out in favor of HTML5.

Silverlight will still be used in Windows Phone 7/8 development though.

Hi there
Unfortunately some sites use it for protected DRM content when streaming Video / Some live Radio streams for example Live Baseball outside the USA / Live TV on the Internet.

For example Sky Go -- a service I actually LIKE -- uses it to allow the media player to access protected content.

While fortunately DRM is really Dead and Buried in Audio - it's still alive and kicking for Live TV / Internet video streaming.

I doubt if MANY (who aren't developers) on this Forum will ever use Silverlight directly --but they will often have used it indirectly --especially if they subscribe to some subscription services like SKY TV and the like.

These services need a better mechanism --but currently with all its drawbacks it dos work so I'm afraid we are going to be stuck with it for a while yet.

Cheers
jimbo
