Hi everyone:

So here is my issue, I was using win 10 tp in vmware just fine and wanted to try it on my physical hardware. so I made a usb of the TP and shutdown and put a hdd in my pc for it. told it to install to that disk and it installed fine then rebooted and i got a startup error saying winload was not same version as os and i was like that's weird. Well turns out my hdd installed to was on my non intel controller and so it installed its bootmanger on my ssd (its what i get for not unplugging it) and now my startup for 7 is hosed. I am trying to get a iso i can use to make a usb or 7 sp1 but my only current iso was of a non sp1 so it will not work to repairwith. I made a repair disk with the sp1 pc downstairs but it loads up saying a device is keeping it from connecting with the pc its error e9c i believe. I tried to get a digital river download of the os to then repair with but now microsoft implements this site Microsoft Software Recovery and that would be fine except that all my keys are in a word document on a raid array that I can no longer access till it is in windows. Can win pe see windows mirrored disk's? Also my 7 other pc's key on that site says its oem so they wont get me an iso. any help or advice would be appreciated. And yes I have tried t restore from a backup can't find them, this is another whole issue for me at this point that must be resolved. If i can get a bootable anything to see the mirrored disks i can open my key file on my laptop. thanks again.

Malcolm

Hi there

Another quick solution to recover your keys (read on the RAID HDD) is to download any Linux Live distro - boot from the USB and then read the other disks. Linux can read Windows disks (NTFS etc).

Another possibility -- simply DOWNLOAD the latest W10 ISO (build 9926) and install it on the PC -- the original problem was you had a VM and tried to restore that to REAL hardware. It CAN be done (known as a V2P conversion) but it's not usually a simple process unlike converting a REAL machine to a VIRTUAL one (P2V). Once you've installed W10 you should be in a position to recover your W7 system / keys etc.

NEXT TIME --always take an OS Image before doing any testing - then you can always restore. Use something like Acronis / Macrium etc.

Cheers
jimbo

i did have acronis images but they walked away lol. im currently making a win pe atm with win 8 so i can hopefully attach my raid, linux wont see it as a disk it can open as it is a mirror array and not single disks. Im wondering if I will just have to repair install my 7 at this point. I can take a pic of what error it gives me but it seems to have all the ten bsd stuff on it now. If I can get into the raid then i have my keys and iso's in there.

thanks for you time jimbo, will keep you informed on my progress.

I have gotten my keys back and am trying to repair windows now.
Also I did not try to go VM to physical I liked it in the vm so I installed it fresh from a usb to another whole disk.

EDIT: windows installer says its is not same version guess i'm hosed an need to re-install.

Don't feel to alone the first two times I did dual boot I had to re-install 7 :)
I'm getting quite good at it oddly enough :/
Always an adventure
Now if I use 10 it's the only drive inserted for install and usage no more re-installs unless it's a new build on a clean install.
Now if I can not repeat my hdd's from getting bricked I'll be in good shape,
Only one cheap hdd lost so far,
Cheers.

yeah i got screwed lol all because I can't boot off my avmedia ports it seems it basically overwrote my windows folder i think on the ssd. I tried to rebuild my bcd and it always says it cant find what it needs and sfc /scanow says a repair is pending so i can't make it try anything. I'm currently deciding if i'm gonna go win 7 again or jump to 8.1. As far as I an tell though this install is beyond hosed. I'm most mad at the fact I apparently erased on my other drive my backups>.>

Yea I plan on keeping 7 for a long long time,
8.1 will get the free upgrade to 10 there's nothing there for me on 8.1 that will be missed,
Darn shame about the back ups never a good time for that,

Clean installs are great though nice and fast again,
Your system spec's are looking darn good :D

I might be late on this one GregRocker knows this stuff inside out, you might PM him and ask before doing anything I post.

If your System / Active partition is the System Reserve, you might try changing it to your Boot partition C:
The way I understand it is:

Launch and elevated Command Prompt
Launch Diskpart
lis dis
sel dis 0
lis par
lis vol
sel par 1
det par
^^ should be the System Reserve - if not select the correct one

inactive

sel par 2

^^ should be your Boot partition - if not select the correct one
^^ size gives you a hint

active

exit
exit

Boot to your Win7 Repair disc and execute a Startup repair
restart
repeat the Repair / restart two more times

To late but that's okay I learned my lesson and now am on 8.1 and happy, Is there a way to now not disable but change the duration it takes when doing the minimize and maximize animations though? I have them off currently as you can like watch them do it since my resolution is so big and it takes a while.

On a side note: I found that and tried pretty all of that info but the bcd and most of my files were from ten so no repair tool could understand what my os was anymore I backed up what I needed off the ssd and started from scratch. Windows 8.1 does start up lightning fast compared to seven though(off to desktop in about 15 seconds).

Thanks for all your help everyone.

Ok, glad you were able to 'sort it out' by moving up to Win8. I've been using Win8.1 for 3/4 of a year and find going back to Win7 (native Win8 Hyper-V machine) a bit clunky - Win8 is faster and MS has vastly improved the Windows Update process for devices - it works 99.9% of the time, whereas devices only worked 80% of the time in Win7 (mostly AMD and touchpad 'failures' requiring a rollback).

I only use the modern side of Win8.1 for the program menu, most apps are 'duplicates' of Desktop applications, and I find that the Desktop versions provide better depth.

As far as defining the animation or other visual effects - no, I don't know of any way to slow down or speed up animations. I have a minimalist configuration - only a few things that I like. No slides, no fades, no animations, no shadows .....

Yeah meant to change it not disable it, I'm back on 7 though as 8 was having some issues with my hardware and all things like memory speed was faster in 7 for some reason. 7 is all set and good now and this thread is officially over.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
