Solved win 7/32 Pro not recognising native printer

New PC which due to Networking issues had to be rebuilt via a clean install of Win 7/32 Pro (system partition reformated), The PC had been installed for one week before client decided the network issue was not livable with - the Canon Pixma MP760 was working fine then.

Now, we are unable to get the PC to recognise the printer - the fax and scanner components are installed, but not the printer where the drivers are supposed to be imbedded in Win 7. We do briefly see a message at boot-up (when printer is on) that an (unnamed) device failed to load - which I guess is the printer.

We have tried three different USB ports - when we first connected the printer, the printer was off when we booted up the PC; turning on the printer results is zilch.

PS: I do have a logitech usb wireless keyboard/mouse installed (okay) and external hdd (okay).

Gigabyte h55 board, intel i5-750 cpu (not over-clocked), 4gb ram, 500gb hdd, dvdrw, card reader, 600w psu. Device manager shows no errors. No AV installed yet - no out-of-the ordinary software. SP1 installed.

Unplug printer from pc (usb I assume), then uninstall printer software, reboot. When PC is finished loading up, run Malwarebytes and Ccleaner to get rid of any bugs. Now, reinstall printer software first, then during the software install it will tell you when to hook up the usb cable.

Note: As a rule, all external hardware such as printers, keyboard, webcams and so forth, the software must be installed first, then the physical connection with the cable. Always, unless it's plug n play.

Thank you, but tthe driver is supposed to be native? ie there is no 3rd party software to uninstall or re-install - so could you please clarify.............

I think bassfisher might be suggesting that you download the driver and any other software for the Pixma MP760 first, and then try the installation.

Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : PIXMA MP760

Select Windows 7 (not Windows 7 x64) and you'll be offered the driver and related software to download. I'd download everything to the desktop but install just the driver. Leave the printer unplugged from the computer. If Canon is anything like Lexmark or Brother you should get a prompt during the driver installation when to connect all cables and power.

Possibly I am not being very clear..................the Canon Pixma mp780 is supposed to have native Windows 32/7 support. In other words the Canon websites do NOT provide the inf files for the printer (only an add-on module for extra photo options), the download only includes drivers for the scanner and fax. This is true for Vista/32 too - sometimes one can find differences in the US/European sites, but having tried both, there are no printer inf files.

So repeating my original questions........How to get Win7/32 to recognise the MP780 direct connected via USB port, where the driver is supposed to be supported directly from Win7/32 - as I said I do see an USB error message but doesn't tell me what device it is referring to, and is too quick to get a full grip on - something about usb device install failed - can't see anything in the event logs which might have clarified the problem.

Possibly our US friends have given up?

I would like some other suggestions though, we have already had to rebuild this system once due to some impossible networking situations (posted elsewhere), client is obviuosly becoming rather irritated with all these issues, so would appreciate some good solid suggestions as to how to get around this.

Okay here is the solution, but why oh why is Microsoft 7 making life so diffiecult?

1. If the driver for any printer is supposed to be native to win 7 (ie the manufacturer is not providing the necessary *.inf files) then Microsoft is supplying them. But for a bunch of printers the drivers are not included within the installation disks, nor are they downloaded via the usual Windows Updates (including SP1). This applies for example the Canon Pixma MP780.

2. Then the process will probably require the user to ensure the printer is on and connected, goto devices and printer, then add printer, for local printers, click local, then click on exisiting port (usually LPT1). The trick is then to click on "windows update" assuming your printer is not in the list (if it was it would have been found!).

Hope this saves others the frustration that I suffered over the past few days.

You're right ... that's more difficult than it should be. But I'm glad you were able to get it sorted out.

i had to do the same thing with my older HP-DJ 3xxx series.. drivers not compatible with Win7, recognized it as a failed device install at first.. let it check for updates automatically when trying to update the driver, finally recognized it as my printer and have been able to print since.. PITA, but dont really need to buy a new printer right now (that's the ONLY thing I have that wasnt new upon building my machine)
