I have an MSI gaming laptop (Model: GX720). It came with Win7 32bit and I decided to install the Win7 64bit version. My system is capable of running the 64bit version of Windows 7 (According to Performance Information and Tools and Windows 7 upgrade advisor). I tried installing Win7 64bit and when it finishes it hangs on "Starting Windows logo", I noticed that the HDD's flash light stops flashing, I left it there for about 10 minutes and nothing. I also tried "safe mode" and I noticed it hangs on "CLASSPNP.SYS".

I have installed 32bit from the same DVD and it installs successfully. Only the 64bit version seems to fail, but, only on my laptop because on my mom's, my brother's, and my girlfriend's laptop -64bit and 32bit works perfectly with the same DVD I'm using to install my 64bit version. My system's specs are:

-Intel® 45nm Montevina Core™ 2 Duo Processors P7350 2.0GHz - 2.4GHz 3MB Cashe 1066MHz FSB (Centrino 2)
-4.00GB DDR2-800MHz Dual Channel Memory
-NVIDIA® GeForce®130M-GT 512MB DDR3 + Turbo Cache - 17" WXGA (1600 x 900) TFT display ACV
-SATA Hardrive 320GB

Any ideas? Thank you.

Googling "CLASSPNP.SYS" and windows 7 finds lots of links about BSoD's and failed boots. Sadly, there don't seem to be any solid fixes, but there are some suggestions. Make sure your BIOS settings are set to "Default" is one of them.

Also, I had this issue when I tried to put 8 Gig of ram in my VAIO SR290 notebook. Win 7 x64 wouldn't boot up, and I couldn't successfully re-install it. x64 Ubuntu worked fine with 8 Gigs and Win 7 32 bit worked fine with 8 Gigs installed.

I took out 2 Gigs and all was well. Win 7 x64 worked fine with 6 Gig. You could try removing some ram and see what happens.

Nothing. It didn't work. I called MSI and they said is runs 64bit (Of course), but they just haven't tested MSI systems much. My only option is to call Microsoft and see what they say. This has something to do with my hardware but I don't know what is causing the OS not to load and hangs on "Starting Windows".

I did a "chkdsk" and the didn't fix it. And the Short DST of Seagate Seatools, I have no idea how to do that. I believe it's something with my hard-drive. But what could it be? Like I mentioned before, the HDD's light stops flashing when "Starting Windows" shows up. MSI hasn't really tested 64bit on their system much, so they "can't" help me as in for now.

I just had this issue with my desktop. This may or may not resolve your issue but it's worth a shot.

Go into your BIOS settings (Usually hitting the Delete key as the machine first boots up) and reset to defaults. Save the settings and restart. See if this helps. It is a hardware issue. The problem is it's difficult to say which hardware is causing it. There are a few settings in the BIOS that Windows 7 has issues with, from the amount of research I did (extensive) it's generally a legacy issue.

Also as a side note: I found that removing my nVidia GTS 250 resolved the issue as well. Although the card is perfectly fine. This is why it's hard to determine the issue with CLASSPNP.SYS because it relates to so many different pieces of hardware.

Wouldn't this cause me not to see anything afterwards?

Turn off everything you can in the bios. I have seen Networking adapters or sound devices cause problems like this.

Okay I think I understand why this happens. MSI does not support 64bit drivers, thus when Win7 64bit tries to load the drivers on "Starting Windows" (CLASSPNP.SYS) it will hang in there.
