I use CHROME and EDGE (and Firefox & IE occasionally) for various AUDIO projects I do, and now CHROME and/or WIN7 wants to keep automatically adjusting my LINE INPUT audio levels to my machine. HOW do we disable this?

1) I've already UNCHECKED the box for "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device," in the ADVANCED tab for the LINE IN.
2) I've also hit the COMMUNICATIONS tab and selected "DO NOTHING" for the 'When windows detects communications activity,' and that too make no difference.

Any thoughts?

Hi, this happens on Windows 10 too. I would like to know what the solution is.

Do you have a microphone connected while this happens?

I'm using the LINE INPUT, no MIC. I have a recording studio... all audio goes thru the mixer before hitting the PC.

1. Are you sure the Line Inputs are being adjusted? Had you tried listening to the sound you input via different speakers and/or headsets? Does the audio level variation affect any recording you make on the computer?

2. Some folk who do a lot of recording work, use Virtual Cable to route the audio in the PC.
Perhaps separating the Input from the Output via Virtual Cable is the solution. Here are several scenarios where the audio has been re-routed within the PC: Virtual Audio Cable Enables multiple audio Outputs

Yes... I can pull up the adjustment for the line input and WATCH it lowering as I record with high levels. but only when I'm using web-browsers like CHROME & Microsoft Edge will it happen. So somewhere, either in CHROME or EDGE there's some sort of auto-gain control that's instructing WINDOWS to LOWER the LINE INPUT.

I'm using Opera (a Google browser). When I click on Sound in the system tray and select mixer, there is a selection for Opera, which says Win 7 audio levels being adjusted by Chrome, Edge, etc. and tells one to go to the Microsoft Community. If I set the volume for that selection to "0" it also mutes the sound from my speakers. I found a blog on this here-

Automatic volume leveling during audio playback - Microsoft Community

although it doesn't really answer the question except in a few cases and it seems nobody associates the problem with Chrome, Edge, etc.

I don't know if the solution provided here will help-

How to Prevent Windows from Automatically Reducing System Volume
