Ok. When I install Win 7 I get to the 'select which drive to install Win 7 on' and it correctly lists all my drives. I have a 1TB storage drive with files currently on it, I have a 320gb drive formatted for the OS and a 400gb formatted where I will install all my media.

Heres the thing I select the 320gb drive (drive 0) as my choise to install the OS on and click next. It then informs me that it needs to partition the drive to store system files on. No options other than to click ok or next. After the install I find that it has used the spare drive to partition the 100-200mg for the system and not the main drive. It does this everytime and there doesnt seem to be anyway around it other than disconnecting the spare drives and loading windows then reconnecting the drives.

Has anyone experienced this problem. If this is the case and how it will always be Im gonna have to make a mental note for when the final version comes out.

Other than that have had no issues with Win 7.

First off welcome to the sevenforums! By the sounds of it you may have mixed an ide drive along with two sata models if the 400gb is that. The installer for any version will automatically seek out the first drive be an ide or first sata installed to see the main boot loader and boot information placed along with the entries into the master boot record(mbr).

With multiple drives here I ended seeing a 1tb sata drive plugged into the last port and unplug two other sata drives for installing on the first, second, third unless intentionally seeing another installation added into automatically into the boot options. When having ide drives plugged in here but planned on installing to one of the sata models the ide drive was first unplugged to avoid seeing anything placed there.

Thanks for the welcome nighthawk :).

All the drives are Sata no IDE. The 320 drive is on disk0, and the 400 on disk1. I've come to think the OS seeks out a seperate formatted drive to use for its system partition as you can only select the drive to install the OS on not the system partition.

When I disconnect my other drives it installs seamlessly with the system partition on the same disk.

What method for installation are you using there? dvd? virtual drive? usb key? If the 320gb is already partitioned and formatted what was it formatted to and by what?

The reason for that is if you used a 3rd party tool like GParted and simply right clicked on the prmary? or extended? partition you may forgotten to drop down the list of file systems to the NTFS item there. The default is the Linux ext2 type.

DVD install... Im using the format controls in the setup menu. Not using anything but setup. Win 7 just chooses for me where to install the system partition and when my other drives is plugged in it chooses that.

When first going to install 7 here I tend to first use a 3rd party drive tool for seeing the drives here partitioned and formatted before proceeding. Once the installer is up I select the custom option and select the intended primary to then see all setup files unpacked there.

It's quite likely you either saw a bad burn or need to download a fresh copy since the one you have now or the disk is missing something. The MS downloader generally sees a good download here which makes me suspect you had a bad blank you burned the iso image to. I toss a few of those on occasion!

Once you highlight the primary even if you had another drive plugged in you should automatically see the files unpacked there while the boot information, mbr entries may still end up on another drive like I was mentioning before. That's the immediate impression I get about simply seeing a bad burn from the problems you are running into there.
