Good evening to all. I have a curious problem Restoring some files from a Win 7 Backup. While I use Macrium for system images and Cobian for data folder backups, I thought I would experiment with the inbuilt Win 7 Backup.

I do not have a problem restoring std. user folders -Docs, pics, music, downloads, contacts etc. However, restoring from the users Appl Data Folder, such things as Windows Live Email folders, they will not restore to original folder. If I create another blank email folder in WLM and tell it to restore there, no problem. I have attached a log file showing a test restore of just 1 email folder.
Anyone have experience with this issue?
Many thanks
JohnnyA

Hello johnnya,

Did you do an image-backup, or just a file backup? An image-backup will take the whole volume and take a "picture" of it!
File restore in Windows7 is not designed to restore back applications.
- said Microsoft, I believe your AppDATA folder is regarding this also!

Make sure to check out this thread:

Thread

And more appropriate:
Win 7 skipped folders during restore

======================

Does your AppDATA contain anything? If no, it will probably give you the error.

Best Regards,

The only time I've had that sort of thing was when the files were in use. Was you e-mail client active at the time?

Oh yes, indeed, I forgot to ask!
If you have any open clients using your AppDATA folders, you should shut them down. If it's not possible as Windows is using it, it is possible to Restore from your Windows 7 DVD!

Hi Fredegail & Kado897 and thank you so much for taking the time to reply. The two links you provided Fredegail were excellent and right on target. Unfortunately, they did not provide a solution. The backup type I performed was just a file backup. All folders for my user account which of course includes the application data folder where Windows Live Mail sub folders are kept. Good call Kado897 but I made sure that the Mail Program was shut down when I tried the restore. The subject folder is indeed on the backup but restore skips these files as shown on my original attachment. Also tried running the restore with hidden Admin account with the same result. Looks like it's back to the drawing board for me. Once again, thanks for your excellent suggestions.
Best regards
John
