Hi,
I built a new pc with AMD fx8150 with ASUS M5A97R 2.0 .
I had never seen such a bios before with so many complications

(Compatibility Support Module /Secure Boot/Win UEFI MODE or Other OS/Legacy Mode/Both Modes/Load Keys/PK/KK/KEY Management... etc)

so loaded bios default and installed OS Win 7 Ultimate x64. (Bios showed 2 DVD drives in boot selection menu when i have only one).
I completed the installation and when rebooted the windows returned with error "disk read error occurred-press ctrl+Alt+del to restart) and this continues for 3-4 times and suddenly 5th attempt will boot my windows.
sometimes it will only boot after i enter the BIOS>Boot Menu>Boot Priority and select BOOT OVERRIDE option.

please help me out of this strange situation

(note: i was going through few article on web but they confused me more and more mentioning about MBR and GPT.. i am non technical person so its very hard to understand what they mean)

thanx for the link...

but they all guide to the Win 7 installation on UEFI mobo.

I want to install win7 ultimate x64 in legacy mode (non uefi) on the UEFI mobo (Asus M5A97 R2.0) so it will create MBR instead of GPT
(now im not getting these BIOS options correctly.. What is Win in UEFI mode and OTHER OS means? in CSM option there are many sub menus like Legacy First+ Both,UEFI only,UEFI First etc ) thats making me more confused.

so if i want to install Win7 in MBR mode what CSM options and What OS options do i need to select ?

Currently i installed os with USB (selecting USB boot option ,i did not select UEFI -USB)completed the installation(clean) but when i boot, after ASUS logo it throws error "disk read error press ctrl+alt+del to restart. when its done,it boots up in windows normally.... why this disk error popping up every time ..but just once.. ?

note: i tried with 3 diff HDD with same error so bad HDD is not the issue...

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS, enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support "Legacy Mode", set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. We are creating the partition here to mark it Active which overcomes certain install failures.

hello greg

i have done almost the same way except my SATA is set to IDE.

and

Bios states one more confusing settings "Secure Boot = Enabled "
under that : OS Type 1. Windows UEFI
2. Other Os
Secure Boot Mode Standard / Custom
Under that lots of Key Management (PK/KEK/DB/DBX)

Secure Boot will only boot Win8 so must be disabled.

From there you can install Win7 in UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums

- or -

follow the steps I gave above to Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7 - this link tells more about Secure Boot and how to disable it and bypass UEFI to install Win7 normally to an MBR disk.

Here is more information including a video on UEFI so you understand it better:
The 30-year-long Reign of BIOS is Over: Why UEFI W... - Input Output
Technical Note: UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS - YouTube

You may want to try UEFI install first to see if you like its enhanced BIOS features, but if it becomes too much trouble it sometimes is easier to bypass it.

It would not have a setting if there isn't a way to change it. Look for instructions there or in your mobo Manual on the Asus Support Downloads webpage for how to change a setting. Do you need a password?

greg

what type of password you are talking about ?
mobo is not asking for any password in relation to changing any bios values...

Then change the setting like everyone else does. I told you where to look for Help. If it's not clear enough on the BIOS tab how to click to make the changes, then read your Manual on the Support Downloads webpage for your model mobo or PC.

I just typed all of this earlier. Why am I having to type it again?
