win 7 clean install - no set up menu

Replaced a SATA HD and want to install win 7 32bit (retail version) Checked the BIOS for 1st boot device is DVD. Bios loading showed both DVD and HD recognised. Booted up, got the DVD tray opened and rebooted. Screen message is 'Reboot and select proper boot device or insert media in selected boot device and press a key' did that and got 'windows is loading files' after which the 'starting windows' screen appears and then the base win7 background screen - that's it! No set up for new OS.
All I've done to the PC is replaced the HD - same slot, same cables.
Where do I look next, please.

Extract the contents of your DVD to a separate drive/partition and run setup.exe from there... this will bypass your DVD player altogether.... Let us know how it goes...

OK. Waited about 5 mins and then it all started.
That was something I have never read about - All set ups I've done before ( non OS) have started at once;that's why I panicked!.
I have never read anywhere about 'waiting to start' when installing Win7. Perhaps tuts on this should mention it.
Anyway, many thanks for your rapid response and all is well and installed.

It is rare but does happen for some reason.

We have a laptop here that sometimes takes 10 minutes to fully load the Win7 installer. But it then installs fine.

When things don't happen, no activity lights etc, then I think it hasn't done what it's supposed to do. I just wish I'd known there could be a 'waiting time' :huh:

I would test my hardware thoroughly all the same:

run Windows Memory Diagnostics Test for both full passes,

download and burn to CD the DOS diagnostics for your HD model found on the maker's Support Downloads page.

Click through the Win7 WEI score link at Computer/Properties to Advanced tools to Generate a System Health Report.
