Win 7 Crashes On First Boot ... Then Fine!

I put together my latest computer myself but I seem to be having a strange problem. Each day I start my computer and it crashes (BSOD) ... I power it down for five seconds then turn it back on and it's fine. I've attached my last two memory dumps (I'm pretty unsophisticated with this stuff so I have no idea how to read them). I'm currently running Windows 7 on a AMD Phenom II quad core computer. Any help in getting rid of this annoying problem would be MUCH appreciated? I just need to know if it's a software or a hardware issue.

Thanks. -GG

First of all, please remove completele Bitdefender or Bull Guard internet security. They are potential cause in one of the dump.
How to uninstall BitDefender
BullGuard Antivirus, Antispyware, Firewall, Spamfilter, Backup and Support - all the security you need in one package!

If you need an alternative antivirus program to protect your computer while not having those 2 above, you can try Microsoft Security Essential:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials

Please download third party called memtestx86, burn it to CD and let it run for at least 7 passes.

Still not working...

I tried those two things. I removed bitdefender completely and I ran memtestx86 for seven passes with no errors. However, I tried cold booting the computer again this morning and I got another BSOD on my first startup. I've attached the new minidump to this email.

I really appreciate the help. Any more ideas?

On more thing I forgot to mention... when I put the computer together months ago I originally had a Radeon HD 4850 card installed ... but after a few weeks the computer stopped working (wouldn't even power up). I got frusterated and started pulling each component to see what the problem was and as soon as I removed the video card it powered up like normal (it's got an onboard Radeon HD4290 which I'm now using instead). I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this problem but I thought maybe it could indicate a power supply issue?

Help please.

Ok ... I've never used driver verifier before. I read the little tutorial that was posted but I'm still not sure how to proceed. What task should I select?

thanks, GG.

Driver Verifier used ...

Ok, so here's where I stand...

I enabled drive verifier following your instructions. I restarted the computer a couple of times and it didn't cause any BSODs (not sure if it's supposed to). I left it enabled and today when I cold booted I got a BSOD on my first boot again (I've attached the minidump file). Is driver verifier supposed to produce its own dump file as well? If so, where can I find it?

Any additional ideas on how I can figure out what's wrong?

Thanks for all your help.

-GG

The dump does not point to a concrete software cause, so let's test hardware.

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Test your hard drive: HD Diagnostic

Tried Hardware Tests...

So I tried the hardware tests. Memtestx86 reported no errors after seven passes. I ran the Western Digital "extended test" diagnostic on the hard drive and it gave it a "pass" which I guess means it detected no errors. So I guess it's back to the drawing board ... any more ideas?

Thanks,
GG

Try leaving your computer off for the night, then immediately running that Memtest without booting into Windows.

Great call!

Great call! I did Memtestx86 on the first cold boot of the day (when it typically crashes) and it showed a whole bunch of errors.

I've been using this RAM:
Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

With this motherboard:
Newegg.com - ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890GX HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

The RAM was operating at 666 Mhz (DDR 1333) CAD: 9-9-9-24 DDR3 (64-bits)

Is this a poor RAM pairing? Do you think they're damaged?

Thanks again!!!

Hi ggrib, sorry to see your problems.

Let's start with the RAM timings information.

D/L CPUZ and post the Memory and SPD tabs.

Have you changed the RAM settings?
If yes, then tell us what changes you have made.
Is the RAM AMD certified, there are known issues with standard Intel RAM BSoD'ing on AMD boards.

Have you OC'ed the CPU?

Are you running win7 32bit or 64bit?

Let us know the info and we'll take it to the next step.

EDIT:
The F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL is listed on the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO Series board QVL as compatible for 2GB(2x1GB), but has different versions for 4GB. This may be an issue, we can try a few things first, but we may have to come back to it.

Here is the M4A89GTD PRO Series Motherboard Qualified Vendors Lists (QVL) DDR3-1600 MHz capability.

The M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 manual. Check the manual for BIOS settings location and instructions.

G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-2GBNQ 2GB(2 x 1GB) SS - - - 1.6v
G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL 2GB(2 x 1GB) SS - - - 1.6v

G.SKILL F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH(XMP) 4GB(2 x 2GB) DS - - 7-7-7-24 1.65v
G.SKILL F3-12800CL8D-4GBRM(XMP) 4GB(2 x 2GB) DS - - 8-8-8-24 1.6v
G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBECO(XMP) 4GB(2 x 2GB) DS - - 9-9-9-24 1.35v

Your current RAM is not listed for this MOBO.
After checking the CPUZ settings, we can try to set the RAM timings and voltages manually in BIOS. Let us know what the CPUZ memory and SPD tabs are first.

Side(s): SS - Single-sided DS - Double-sided DIMM support:
• 1 DIMM: Supports one (1) module inserted into any slot as Single-channel memory configuration.
• 2 DIMMs: Supports two (2) modules inserted into either the blue slots or the black slots as one pair of Dual-channel memory configuration.
• 4 DIMMs: Supports four (4) modules inserted into both the blue and the black slots as two pairs of Dual-channel memory configuration.

• When overclocking, some AMD CPU models may not support DDR3 1600 or higher frequency DIMMs.
• Visit the ASUS website for the latest QVL.

Which slots are you using?

G.Skills doesn't list your MOBO or Chipset for this RAM.

Almost even more concerning than the RAM not working is the fact that my processor speed comes up as 802 Mhz when the processor speed should be 3.4 GHz! Is this another problem I wasn't even aware of??

I haven't made any changes to the RAM settings.
I believe the RAM is AMD certified.
I have not overclocked the CPU.
I'm running Windows 7 64-Bit.

Agreed. I'm not running the (2x1 Gb) ... I'm running the 2x2Gb.
I'm using the two blue RAM slots.

I've uploaded pics of the CPU/Memory/SPD tabs.

Please help ... I'm not completely and utterly confused why a) the RAM keeps crashing after the cold boot and b) Now my CPU is apparently only using one of its cores (or all four cores at way low levels)!

Thanks again,
-GG

Ok ... just read about speedstep ... I guess that's what is happening with my multipler / core speed. Nevermind about the CPU issue. As I said, this is my first build so I'm new to all of this.

The RAM issue remains though.

Cheers,

Very good thorough replies, this will help with the testing.

Before continuing, save settings in your BIOS if your BIOS version allows.

Make a backup of your OS partition/drive, I recommend Macrium Reflect free edition or Acronis True Image WD Edition this is also free if you have a WD HDD in your system.

Which BIOS version are you using?
Check if there is an updated version available.

Check the version of the chipset drivers and AHCI or IDE drivers, also check if there are updated drivers available.
Let us know the versions of these.

Speedstep is a great function and shouldn't affect the RAM.
To check for max CPU speed have CPUZ open when doing a memtest or Prime95, you will see the CPU speed.

First, run Memtestx86 with the RAM in the black slots, first thing in the morning as you did previously.
Report if any errors or none.

Run Memtestx86 with one RAM stick in the first blue slot, report status.
Then run Memtestx86 with the other RAM stick in the first black slot, report status.
We are checking for bad RAM and bad slots.

If these pass after the first cold boot in the morning, try the test again with single stick in blue slot and then black slot at cold boot, one stick at a time.

We are trying to confirm a single RAM stick BSoD with cold boot.

Second thing is to set the RAM timing manually in BIOS.

Read up on it in your MOBO manual, if you have any questions, reply here.

Let's try the JEDEC #4 settings first. 9-9-9-25, leave the rest on auto.
Test for BSoD, which may require the cold boot scenario.

Check you BIOS for the RAM voltage, Vcore, and let us know, if it is 1.50v then let's increase it in small steps.

If you are still getting the BSoD, increase the RAM voltage (set manually) from 1.50v to 1.55v, test.
Then if still BSoD, 1.60v, test.
Then if still BSoD, finally 1.65v, test.
For now I don't recommend going over 1.65v.

The main difference between Intel and AMD RAM is the required voltage, Intel i5 & i7 are usually 1.5v while AMD is usually 1.65v.
Some RAM will run on AMD boards at 1.50v and some won't.

I tried moving to 9-9-9-25 today and it still crashed. I upped the volts by 0.05V but I'll need to wait until tomorrow for another cold boot to test it.

Would it be easier to just buy two new sticks of RAM that I'm 100% certain are compatible with this setup (I was thinking of these Customer Reviews Of CORSAIR XMS3 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TW3X4G1333C9DHX)?

I'm ok with making a $100 mistake as long as I'm sure changing the RAM will solve the problem. Or do you think these are salvageable?

Thanks for your help/guidance.

When you say you upped the voltage, is that from 1.5v to 1.55v?
Does it crash after the computer is warmed up?

You can try the cold boot scenario with 1.6v, when possible.

Some RAM is just a bit more difficult to get working, it depends on the RAM and MOBO.

I would test incrementally increasing the voltage, if originally at 1.5v, then 1.55v, then 1.60v, finally 1.65v.
There are instances sited that the increase in voltage does work, but not always.
If they won't run with the timings manually set and voltage manually set the chances dramatically drop, you might be able to play with the timings and get it to work, with the cold boot issue, it will take a long time to test.

If you want to get your system working in a shorter time frame, then I would get different RAM, it's likely going to be the end result, but the voltage increase is worth trying.

G.SKILL has a very good warranty and return policy, or you could try to sell them.

The Corsair TW3X4G1333C9DHX you mentioned or the CMD4GX3M2A1600C8(XMP) are both listed as compatible with your MOBO. Either one are a good choice.

Let us know what you decide and how this turns out, will be helpful to others.
