I followed the Tutorial/433-disk-check.html but it isn't working: The "Checking file system......one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency..." screen stays up. Let it cook for 24 hours and screen still up. I did go in and check the "check on startup" so the C drive wouldn't be in use. Is this something that can be fixed by a Windows fix? I'm sure the hard disk has errors and needs to be fixed but what short of sending my computer away for a week and then having to re-install all my software?

It sounds like the HD. Software wouldn't cause the errors. Can you move the hd to a diff computer to test it?

I have another Windows 7 computer but can't take the drive in it out because it's in use. I think you are right...it's the hard drive. But can't bad sectors on a hard drive be detected and skipped with the disk check software?

Welcome to SF!

1) If you have a Windows installation disk you can boot from that and perform a chkdsk on your bum drive
2) You can download the Free Partition Wizard, create a Boot disk, and boot your computer with that - it will also offer an option to perform a disk scan

I have the Windows Recovery Environment Disk that BestBuy gave me with the computer. It has Boot & BootMgr files on it. I'm guessing one of these will work.
