Has anyone found a cure for this?

In Win Explorer when in the directory pane and clicking to expand a directory the focus jumps to the bottom of the pane. Then you have to scroll back up. Each time you open a directory it will do it. Man! it's a bummer.

I don't know of a fix for Win 7 Windows Explorer, but take a look at Q-Dir, a Windows Explorer replacement. It's free and works very much like Windows Explorer did in XP.

It's also quick, even browsing Network connections.

Gawd I hate that!

Also did you notice if you use the arrow keys to navigate the folder structure in the left pane, it no longer shows contents of the folder in the right pane like XP did when you moved up and down the folders using arrow keys, now you have to hit enter key to display contents of the folder in the right pane.

I would also like to get rid of the Libraries and Favorites in the left pane.

I just installed Q-Dir for comparison, and I like it's 4 panes, but it seems to lack a method of quick volume selection. All that I have found is by going through the folder tree within a pane, and that seems to produce a shrunken window within the pane to view the files. Am I missing something? Since I has a large pane available, why doesn't it use it?

Explorer Bug

Everyone is suggesting alternative file managers. So I just loaded a copy of Altap Salamander I already had. (not a freebie) It has several features you would expect to have in a file manager. I thought MS might address Explorer in some of their updates. But have failed to do so to date. I don't flame MS but they have dropped the ball. One reason could be a lot of people don't even use file managers. I have seen people that didn't know about dir structure etc. Case closed

Great for moving files around! Okay, it isn't free. But it was definitely worth the money. AND it remembers 'maximise' setting on Properties. Something which Windows Explorer never manages to do since Vista came out!

Great for moving files around! Okay, it isn't free. But it was definitely worth the money. AND it remembers 'maximise' setting on Properties. Dopus is another explorer alternative, it will cost you some beans, but I have to say that it is a very nice app to use.

I also own and use PowerDesk Pro 7 but as it's not free, I didn't suggest it. It's been my favorite file browser since early XP days. I think I even had a version that worked with OS/2 at one time.

Windows 7's default explorer is the best way to browse files. Windows XP style explorers are unusable and fugly.

You can do this in Xplorer2 mate. Just done both types of file myself!

Ahh.. I meant you can via file 'properties', not like what you shown in your screenshot. Sorry mate.

It's ok Default explorer is not so bad more after the fix so I will just continue with it. Properties is okey for one or two files but when it's over 10 it's too slow

Try this:

FreeCommander - freeware file manager

This is the one I've adopted to replace "Power File Gold" (previously named "Drag 'n' File") which I'd started using back in Win95 days. Power File began to have some operational issues starting with WinXP but the author apparently bailed out of maintaining it. So I'd continued using it for years knowing about its quirks and just dealing with them.

Free Commander has a very similar look and feel to Power File Gold, with a very similar but much more powerful toolbar customization capability... and that makes me feel right at home, and also not lacking any single-click icon functionality.

But Free Commander has SO MUCH MORE (not to mention its stability under WinXP and Win7 x64) that Power File Gold never had but which I'd always wanted (or, never having thought about it before do truly appreciated now that it's available). For example, custom column arrangements, custom fonts and colors, folder tabs, etc.

I don't need more than 2 panes... and I prefer over/under for drag-n-drop with side-by-side used for comparisons. Free Commander offers either, along with the 1 pane option as well.

I feel that the creation of Free Commander, like Power File Gold, to be a truly external and separate file manager utility... rather than an attempt to be a replacement for Explorer... allows it to be MUCH MORE and actually much easier to get familiar with. It's a standalone program. Also, this allows its own user interface to be designed fully unrestricted... rather than trying to stick within Windows look-and-feel rules and trying to use Windows icons for common functions.

This one's the winner.
