Welcome
If malware and virus' are your concern its best to be sure
Run an anti virus scan and
download and scan with malwarebytes. Run the full scan and be sure to update before using. If you are clean with these two, I am pretty sure it was not a virus or malware problem. It is my opion that it was not a virus or malware problem. Sometimes another program or even corruption during boot can cause these minor annoyances.

I would run the malwarebytes once a week, to keep the nasties away.

You're most welcome Rebornishard.
It could have been caused by a number of things. The most common is either file or icon cache corruption for whatever reason.
It wouldn't be a bad ideal and do what Richard suggested above to be safe though.
