Hi,

In a couple of weeks I'll be upgrading XP to windows 7 and may have all kinds of problems.
I hope it'll be OK to ask here ?

It is the upgrade version (I currently have XP SP3) and I'm hoping it'll keep all my settings programs etc. Is this right? It was bought from Amazon as described as

"Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade" Amazon.com: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade: Software
Thanks.

You don't want to transfer over your settings as it's a corruption path into a fresh new install. In fact I wouldn't use Windows Easy Transfer because you can lose your files. Instead follow the steps which are the same as Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to get and keep a perfect install.

Thanks for that Link. Good information Looks like a re-install of everything. I can keep a XP Image with Seagate Disk Wizard if the worst happens.I expect trouble with the LAN though- sharing some folders on my Wifes PC and maybe the DLNA.
Do folk find a lot of things don't work anymore or is not too bad? I suppose 64 bit is best too ?

Note that a clean install is the only choice from XP; you aren't permitted to do an upgrade-in place.

Windows Easy Transfer has never worked well for me. (That may say more about me than the tool.) I end up transferring everything manually.

64 bit is normally used to allow Windows to access more than 4GB of RAM. The main downside to it is that it won't run old 16 bit code. (The 32 bit version can.)

I believe that file sharing on 7 is easier than with XP, but I don't know how easy it is to do in a mixed Win7 and XP environment.

If you wish to upgrade on the cheap, Win8 is less expensive. You might find that transition a little more, um, interesting than a switch to 7.

Hi bobkn,
Thanks for the reply. Guess I read too much into 'upgrade'. I've never seen/heard/know anything about Windows Easy Transfer so will leave it alone.
I'm dreading how much won't work... and hoping I survive and don't return to XP (I'll keep a drive image so it's possible). I'm hoping it has an XP mode that might run 16 bit or non-compliant stuff.

Win8 was the reason I bought win7 ! I'd been (reliably?) informed Win7 was being phased out and may diffcult to get (as MS wants to force everyone to use win8). But that win8 is a compromise with a desktop PC, more aimed at Androidy things, cell phones etc.).

That was my reasoning too.

XP is on the way out (still like it though!), vista soon after if not at the same time. Win 8 just leaves me cold (although I did try to by it online and it wouldn't complete the sale).

MS doesn't want my money for win 8?

Fresh copy of Win 7 Pro as a gift from a computer nerd friend it is then......:)

FWIW, Win 7 wouldn't upgrade from vista either. I tried but hd to format the partition, although I still ended up with a windows.old file.....not sure how that happened but I'm still new to win 7 so.....

You're better off. Wait until you get a touchscreen to run the touchscreen OS.
