I received my Windows 7 upgrade disk an all seemed to go well untill it hit the "Transfering files, settings and programs" screen and now it seems to have stopped. It doesn't seem to be frozen the mouse moves and I see the hard drive light come on and off but thats as far as it goes for over 2 hours now. This is an I7 machine that's only a couple of months old and Vista 64 ran fine. I did an upgrade as opposed to a clean install since I'd rather not lose everything on that pc. I used the Windows 7 upgrade advisor and the only issue I couldn't fix was with the Gigabyte Bbb36x controler driver. I loaded the one recommened by Gigabyte which was newer than what Microsofts update gave me. (Tried them both neither of which met with the upgrade advisors approval). Question is where do I go from here. Do I just let it run to see if its acually doing something just slowly, or do I try something more desparate?

I would Wait.. Microsoft has reported that the Upgrade process does take a long time.. (I think about 20 Hours) which is forever!! But if you have alot of programs and files it will take along time.. Since you said the mouse moves and the hard drive light comes I would wait..a few more hours to see if it goes though

If all fails just Run a clean install (THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING)

Did you backup before the Upgrade??

I Hope this Helps..

I knew I was going to upgrade this machine when I bought it, so I didn't think I put that much on it. Apparently I put more on it than I thought. The "Installing devices" and "Please wait" notes keep popping up, so I guess something is happening. I missed the 20 hour notice from ms. Thanks for the reply.

Glad I could Help..
and the 20 hours all depends on how much programs and files you have on your computer..I should of said it can take up to 20 hours.. it just all depends on how much is on your Hard Drive..

Hope this Helps..

I was inpressed with all the people that were saying that it only took them 15 or 20 minutes. Really should have deleated those games I guess. Of course I didn't back up like I should have. I thought I had my bases covered and when I had trouble installing Vista on another pc, it just stopped and put everything back. I do have some back ups, just not as recent as I should. So if it really is stopped, what do you think. Just reboot and see what happens?

Where did your install seem to sit for all that time. I'm getting real tired of seeing the blue screen and a bird.

I thought I turned off Norton, but I may have just turned off the firewall not the antivirus. Would this cause my problem?

The Norton ubervirus could certainly bollix an in-place Upgrade which is why they tell you to shut it down.

Since you have that insidious virus and it is impossible to remove without damaging system files anyway, I suggest you boot from disk, delete all partitions, create new ones as you wish, then format and install to first partition.

Afterwards download free Avast Home which is featherlight and, after it's initial boot scan, will let nothing bad in unless you turn it off.

That might be a problem.. According to the Microsoft site they what you to Update your antivirus then Run it and after that Turn it off..(CLICK HERE TO SEE SITE)

(However I am still not able to find why they want you to turn it off)

Does your install (upgrade) seem to be doing anything??

I figured 4 hours was enough time to see some progress so I rebooted and it's rolling back to vista. Once it all comes back hopefully in one piece I'll shut Norton completely down and try it again. If that doesn't work I'll go the clean install route. If I go that route I'll certainly give Avast a try. My Norton subscription is about up anyway.

In times past it would stop any program from writing to the root directory. Sometimes these days I think it just stops programs you want to write to it. In any case a new OS would certainly be trying to write there. I shut it down and I'm going to try it again and see what happens. At least I know the roll back feature of Win 7 works.

Better yet uninstall Norton so it doesn't get its virus tentacles into your in-place Win7 upgrade.

You might consider saving all of your files on an external drive and booting from the disk to do a clean install after formatting the drive. It would be a much cleaner install than Upgrading or overwriting Vista (esp. with Norton) tho you have to reinstall your programs.

http://www.sevenforums.com/installa...-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

Save your files anyway since Upgrades from desktop can fail like one just did along with all the kid's mother's files.

If this doesn't work I will. I backup what I needed when Vista was reinstalled. I'd rather not but I can do a clean install with minimal pain.

Hello all, I am experiencing the exact same issue.

It is a big oversight that there is no internal monitoring of the process during installation... I have no idea if this is happening correctly or not. The screen is not locked up, but I am seeing no progression of the bar or listing of # of files processed in this last stage. In fact, I see no information at all regarding the # of files or settings that it needs to get through. It just keeps flashing back and forth between Please Wait and Installing Devices and Setting up your system.

Occasionally the HD light blinks, but it is clear to me that nothing is happening quickly or regularly.

I have Avast 64 installed, and I deactivated it right before install. No warnings or issues came up at all during the compatibility check.

Also, this is a relatively new PC, and there is about 250GB of programs and data on the system.

This will be my 2nd attempt - the first time I stopped it, assuming that it had failed, and it auto rolled back to Vista. Then I read this string, and we are going on three hours with an i7 950, 6GB of RAM and 250GB of data.

Any recommendations on what I should do next?

Thanks,
R

I am doing the unthinkable and speaking to Microsoft on the phone. :-)

So far I have not been waiting long at all, and they have been very good - but they are still researching a solution.

I know people here think I'm screwy when I tell them to call MS Tech support first, before helping them try things I would probably try here first.

But I have a profound respect for MS Tech support. With one paid retail version of XP Home, I got a full education over 10 years in reinstalling, optimizing, troubleshooting, debugging, and more - worth many times more than the XP itself.

Whle others are cutting back on their Tech support, MS spends hundreds of millions to beef it up for Win7.

So let's hear from people who call now: How is MS Tech Support working for you?

Well, the guy was great - his english was so-so.

Very professional and followed up with an email - even offered to stay on the phone the whole time through the install if I wanted... (!)

But uh, they didn't solve the problem.

It was clear that he was getting help from others, and/or from the knowledge base.

He basically told me to do this; Hanging at 62% when you upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7

But no dice. To tell you the truth, after going through all of this, I looked at the setupact.log and I honestly think it is just taking my system HOURS and HOURS to get through the install. There must be something weird going on, so tonight I will let it run all night and see what happens.

The reason I am thinking this is that when I manually stopped the upgrade after five or so hours, the log file did not show any errors and was at 59% on the last part (not 62% like the known error).

I'll update the thread tomorrow.
