Hello forum members!

Posted this in Backup & Restore, but no response, so thought I'd try here. Sorry if this is in the wrong place!

Sorry cant access System Info, I do know its running Win 7 HP-OEM with recovery disc, AMD Phenom II, 4Gb Ram, ATI Radeon

My problem started with Internet Explorer needing to debug every time it was used, then Windows Explorer started doing same so it became very difficult to access things! Then things like Security centre was turned off, Event notification problems etc etc. I tried some things that were suggested for these problems eg running as Admin and changing settings, TDSS rootkiller, Malwarebytes to no avail.....so I tried recovery from d: no joy! I then tried booting from the disc - no joy, if anything its now worse...cant seem to update anything and it fails to find detection drivers!!

Have tried installing from disc and it eventually says something about them being different and to go to upgrade advisor or something! Even in Safe mode I get the windows explorer has stopped working and other nags!

Any help appreciated, more info if I can provide it

thanks in advance

Mik

Hi Theog, tried at boot...it said "there is a system repair which requires reboot to complete. restart windows and run again which then says "windows resource protection couldn't start repair service"

Run Startup Repair repeatedly from the Win7 DVD or Repair CD to clear the pending repair,, then run the repairs manually which Theog suggests:
Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times
System Repair Disc - Create

You don't say if the recovery or reinstall eventually succeeded or you're still working from original install. If you want to reinstall Win7, we can help you troubleshoot it so that you most definitely will get a clean reinstall without the factory preinstalled bloatware - or will find out the reason why not.

Read over these steps and ask back any questions: Reinstalling Windows 7

If ready then start from the top and report back any failures by giving the exact step and any error messages verbatim.

Thanks gregrocker and theog, I seem to have muddled through, it took quite a few attempts but it seems to have worked with a really minimal install, it also seems to have left a few folders like windows.old, windows.old.000 can they be deleted? Just going through installations etc then hopefully make an image, am just using MS Security Essentials, should i be using different AV etc?

Thx for now

am just downloading and installing updates and already getting IE not working nags! Any suggestions?

Have you had IE9 delivered via Updates yet? Be sure to install it to see what happens.

I'd also install Firefox as a backup browser and to compare.

You don't need Windows.old folder unless you need to retrieve some personal data files from it. No harm in keeping it around if you are not sure about that.

Microsoft Security Essentials is fine. You might consider adding an anti-malware application like Malware Bytes or Super Anti Spyware to go along with MSE.

well after loads of time and frustration with win 7 updates I think we might have cracked it! lol I think I'm now ready to make an image. In diskmgmt.msc I have 4 partitions

1:100mb-System, Active, Primary partition
2:910.41Gb-Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary partition
3:20.0Gb-Primary(Recover)
4:1.0Gb-OEM Partition

which do i need to image?

1 and 2.

Hopefully you already made your Recovery Disks as suggested in the steps I gave you for a perfect reinstall. It is doubtful the Recovery Partition will run now although you can try to boot it and see if it will cue up Recovery using the hotkey given on first boot screen. If not you can delete it as the only other way to run it is if marking it Active and rebooting will work - which you can also try.
Partition - Mark as Active.
(Note that you may need to use Method Two from DVD or Recovery Disk to return Active flag to SysReserved partition)

The OEM partition is also now useless. Both can have their space recovered by deleting using Disk Mgmt or free Partition Wizard.

Ooops! does that mean the recovery disc I already have, (it came with the PC (Medion)) isn't valid? If I boot from disc then choose repair it takes me to the screen that is in the screenshot on System Recovery Disc tutorial so I thought it would still work that way! On boot there is still option to run recovery..just says press any button instead of F11 now! Sorry I need sleeeep lol but will have more questions when I'm alive!

Cheers for now

Oh yeah and if that Recovery disc isnt valid, is it now too late to create another one? Plus when making image will it be an image of both the 100mb partition and the 900Gb one together or will I need to make 2 seperate images?
