I have been trying to install Win 7 (32-bit) on a 1st-timer new build (post works fine) and keep getting crash right after "Setup is updating registry settings". Installation goes into repair/recovery/etc. Had installation completed several days ago (working at it part-time...), but repeated crashes resulted in trying to do clean re-install. Problems first time as well, seem to have been fixed by installing drivers in repair mode. Have tried same this time w/o success - may not have used same sequence. Would work from setupact.log log file, but don't know how to read and fix results (have looked).

System specs:
CPU Intel i7-920
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R bios.F5 (updated)
Memory 3x2GB GSkill F3-12800CL7T-6GBPI
Graphics Card Gigabyte Radeon HD4850 1GB
Sound Card use mobo for now

1) Samsung Spinpoint 500GB #HD502HJ

I suspect the install DVD. Try installing from a thumb drive.

Setuperr.log might reveal is causing the prob - usually the last entry is useful..

Hi, have you got the ram in the right slots.

To boot with 6gb of DDR3, you need to have the ram in the WHITE SLOTS, not the BLUE SLOTS. (Gigabyte's site)

Just a thought. Pull the SSD and attempt install to HDD only. Adjust BIOS accordingly.

Pull SDD & Install to HDD

Casca: If I pull the SSD and install to new partition on HDD, that wipes whatever is on the HDD, correct? Don't have much there and not sure if I can get it off, but want to know first. Thanks.

Yes and no. First, do not delete any partitions or format the target. If you have a Windows directory, it will get saved if you DO NOT choose Upgrade.

You will have an opportunity to do a Folder level review of the drive contents at the "F6" screen where you are asked if you need RAID drivers. I am not sure what will happen if a Users folder exists.

I was thinking about the partition capability in the Win 7 install screen....

Log results

Setuperr.log might reveal is causing the prob - usually the last entry is useful..

I viewed the setuperr.log - empty. The setupact.log had a couple of warnings in it:

Wm_Keyup for 13 key on 0
Wm_Keyup for 9 key on 1
Wm_Keyup for 9 key on 2
(no idea what that means - anyone?)

Finally:
Input install: Not a PS2 device
(believe that is when I put my usb w/ drivers in the slot.

Not a lot to go on.

Installing to HDD did not work either

Just a thought. Pull the SSD and attempt install to HDD only. Adjust BIOS accordingly.

Tried the HDD install, no joy. Have to go talk to the retail shop that sold me the DVD and see if I can get do-over on purchase. THAT'S going to be fun....
