Go ahead and use the latest official ISO for the version you purchased (with SP1 and Refresh) in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall OEM then you can activate it with the key when it arrives.

If you are installing to a HD with no other OS on it now, leave the key blank during install and then afterwards do the quick registry workaround in Option 3 of Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version to activate Upgrade version on a cleaned or blank HD.

If any other OS is on the HD now it should see it and allow use of the key during install.

I will presume here that all available Win 7 Pro CD's don't have the SP1 update? But the Win 7 ISO's do have the SP1/refresh update.

I also purchased a new SSHDD and memory upgrade sticks. So I will be installing the OS on a new drive.

If I understand your post correctly, I can download the Win 7 Pro SP1 ISO following step 1 in the OEM Clean Install tutorial. Then follow the "How to do a Clean Install tutorial with an Upgrade Win 7 Version", correct?

Also if I try to download the ISO then I run into the same problem I had initially, the ISO hanging issue. I connect to my landlord's DSL connection via my own router. I have 54Mbps or 5 full bars, but my download speed is 1.4 Mbps, using SpeedTest.net.

So any suggestions with the download speed to get the ISO downloaded might help.

If you bought retail Win7 from a reputable major retailer (not eBay) then it should have the SP1 disk included. So you can wait for that if you can't download the ISO.

Look over the steps now for Clean Reinstall for many tips, tools and methods that work best and will assure a perfect install.

When you're ready, boot the DVD, during Custom Clean Install Windows 7 create and format partition(s) as you wish and begin install.

I started the Win 7 ISO (64-bit) download again, currently at 1.2GB of 3.1GB. It's moving a bit better than before.

I recently downloaded the MS USB/DVD download tool, and have it on my desktop. Today I read the below post, would it apply to my situation?

"If you're using a Windows 7 ISO (64-bit) on a computer or VM running a 32-bit o.s. or vice versa, the USB/DVD tool won't work. That's it's only flaw compared to going with the CMD."

I received two memory upgrade sticks today. Would it be okay to install them before I do the HDD/OS install? I would like to gauge the performance boost from these memory sticks, if any, with the currently installed Vista 32 bit OS.

Try using UltraISO Software To Create Bootable USB Flash Drive
which should install to either bit-version.

Yes you can install the RAM upgrade whenever you wish. Be sure to power down and protect against static discharge, not working on carpet and touching case metal before touching chip or electronics.

Thanks for the video, exact laptop. Put the two memory sticks in, buttoned it back up. Probably 15-20 minutes. I paused the ISO download, which was about half-way complete, before shutting down and pulling the battery. But on restart the ISO failed, or disappeared when I pulled the battery. So I had to start the ISO download once again .

Hey:

I went into "my computer" today and now see a blue icon that looks like a new drive icon and letter. It is listed as: SD /MMC (F. I installed the two new memory cards yesterday and finally finished downloading the Win 7 ISO last night. So it must be related to either one?

I right clicked the SD /MMC (F drive and under hardware it described the drive as my HDD, Ricoh SD/MMC Disk Device, and TSST Corp. CDDVDW TS-L6321H ATA Device DVD/CD-R....?

Q.1. Any clue as to what this new drive is?

I read some instructions supplied on a site selling the Win 7 upgrade, and is relevant to DirectX 9.0b.

When I did a search on my computer it lists [5] xp_DirectXlinks that all 5 say the same thing. When I right click any of the 5 links it says: DirectX 9.0b. Then Instruction: 1. Run <CDROM>:\Drivers\DX90b\Setup.exe, where <CDROM> represents the drive letter. Then there is a install DirectX 9.0b Now link button.

But the 5 links listed are dated 2004, so I'm thinking the DirectX 9.0 b thing has to do with XP, and not Vista?

Q.2. So does this apply to my Vista to Win 7 upgrade?

The SD/MMC icon you're seeing inside Computer is for your Memory card reader. It is the card that goes inside a Digital Camera.

DirectX 9 is a pretty old version of DirectX used on old games. Windows 7 has its current version which I believe is 11 and also comes with your Graphic Card driver.

I have been installing updated drivers the past week. Maybe this new (F drive showed up as a result of a new driver I installed? Will re-check the drivers I installed.

Use the drivers provided by Win7 in the installer and then updated after you enable Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware (Step 3) and run all rounds of Important and Optional Updates.

This is not XP. You do not need to supply any drivers for Win7 except ones still missing after all rounds of Updates.

This is why I asked you to re-read the steps to get a perfect install, so you wouldn't use outdated XP methods for install.

In step 2 of your "How to Clean Reinstall a Factory OEM Win 7 tutorial." It talks about burning the ISO to USB flash drive. Then clicking the Win 7 USB -DVD download tool link brings you to the USB tutorial by Darryl Licht. The 3rd box down has this warning:

My questions here are:

1. I never heard of UEFI? Do I need to be concerned with this UEFI link?
2. I presume based on a prior post that I can't use the Windows USB tool because I am 32 bit, going to 64 bit, and it won't work in that/my scenario.
3. Shouldn't I be using the "How to do a Clean Install with a Windows 7 Upgrade version?

You say try the UltraISO software to create a bootable USB flash drive. The reason for the ISO for me is, I don't know if the Win 7 Pro Upgrade I purchased, but have not received yet, comes with the SP1 update included or not? You suggested it should be included. So I will have to wait a few days for it to arrive and find out for sure.

If it does have the SP1 update, the simplest method for me would be booting straight from the CD. It may be quicker to install the OS from a USB flash drive. But if its only a matter of say an extra 15-30 minutes or so, it doesn't matter to me. Being a 1st timer doing this, it would probably take me a lot longer to read and fully understand all the tutorials before getting the install done, than it would booting from the CD.

So I'll have to wait until I get the CD's. In the meantime I will keep reading the various tutorials for better understanding in case I do need to use the ISO.

Using the Windows DVD \ USB download tool on an 32-bit OS creating a 64-bit installation will error out with bootsect missing . There is a way to fix that more like a workaround or you could use the UltraIso to create the bootable USB Flash drive .

   Note

Windows DVD\USB tool will format the USB to NTFS format . UEFI uses FAT32 format

If you want to create a 64-bit OS installation USB do the following

Download the bootsect.exe below

• Bootsect.exe

Unzip the file . Copy the Bootsect.exe and paste it to this location

• C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apps\Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool

Then run the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool choose the USB device and it will create a bootable USB with the installation

Thanks for those replies. I finally got the parts, after many shipping miscues, cardboard ship boxes left outside in the torrential rainstorms here in S. Fla. for two days outside an empty apartment. Cool?

At any rate I now have 2 8GB flash drives, and a 1TB External Seagate Backup Plus portable HDD and ready to do a backup of my system. Plus the new Seagate Momentus XT 750GB SSHDD, and Win 7 Pro Upgrade Version which does have SP1 included according to the box. The seller informed me it didn't have SP1 included...? So I'm ready to roll...at least parts wise...technically knowledge wise...knock on wood?

My current HDD has 4 bad sectors on it. My concern here is copying anything corrupt, bad sectors, or uneeded junk onto one of my new drives. Especially the external HDD which I intend to have connected to my laptop via a USB port. And the new internal SSHDD.

So have a few questions:

1. Should I backup my current files to USB Flash or to the new external HDD which will be conncected to the laptop 24/7 for auto-backup?

2. If I copy everything on the old HDD with the bad sectors, will the bad sectors also be copied and transferred to and corrupt either one of the new drives?

3. Good idea to do a Disk cleanup before transferring files to my new drives? If yes, check "My files or all
users"? I am not sure what a disk cleanup actually means? Cleans junk/useless/empty files, or what?

4. Defrag current HDD before transferring files to new drives?

5. I have "Windows Easy Transfer" installed on my current Vista OS. Should I use it to back up-transfer files, pics, etc. to one of my 8GB USB drives or the Seagate Backup Plus External Drive?

6. I also have ImgBurn and Acronis Migrate Easy Setup 7.0.0.645 installed on my laptop as options for backing up. I haven't used any of these programs before, so which one do you guys think would be easiest for me to understand and use?

Once I backup my files, then I'll focus on the next step of installing Win 7 and new SSHDD.

You don't have to worry about bad sectors being copied over it stays in the drive . The only files that should be copied over are the Documents , Favorites , Photos , Music and the files on the Desktop . Programs would need to be reinstalled .

R. It says on a label of the box cover of Win 7 Pro Upgrade: "If you are attempting an upgrade from a clean hard drive, you will receive an invalid key error message. Please refer to this link for additional information. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Windows-7-activation-error-invalid-product-key".

I presume the above warning message is a similar additional, but different error out deal? I believe I referred to this previously, installing an upgrade on a clean/new disk will receive an error message.

Windows 7 automatically makes the file formats the hard drive to NTFS .

The backup I need to do is like 60GB's, my flash drives are 8GB's, and I can't get to 1st base with the Seagate Backup Plus external enclosure. Won't install the install wizard, I get ...

1. errors 1935: MS VC80 ATL issues-version 8.0.50727.4053-MS Visual C++ 2010. I believe this registry key took a vacation somewhere along the way and is no longer on my machine and not repairable. I do have some saved OS programs but I don't know which program file this registry key is on? But I figure why go there when I got a new system ready to install, so no fn clue?

2. Error 1920: Seagate dashboard failed to start, wants me to verify sufficient privileges to start system services. I right clicked administrator to start, same error message...?

3. No disk in drive, please insert disk in drive\Device\Harddisk1\DR1...no fn clue here either?

Seems all I get is Keplunks, red X's, bad disk, error codes, can't open programs, files, etc.etc., I'm getting a complex, Hic!

No fn clue?

You should have had your files backed up externally anyway if they are of any value to you. If you have an external enclosure then just plug it in via USB and whatever power it has. You don't need crapware installed on it which will only bury and probably lose your files. Just sort your files into the organized User folders and drag those to the external as already instructed in the tutorial I link again below.

Everything needed for backup and getting/keeping a perfect install is in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail

Everything you need is in the blue link and works for everyone else. If you continue to have problems then post back the exact errors you are getting when you complete the steps given exactly as they are written.
