I ran a clean install of win 7 pro 64 Bit, on my Dell XPS 32 Bit system and the media, Movies, clips, videos and such are very unstable, when I reinstall WIN XP the media is fine. I also tried the 64 Bit version of Win 7 with the same results. Could it be the the video card? Win 7 does not ask for Nvidia drivers, it uses defaults. Could that be the problem? Also, my Intel Web Cam (C110) will not work but I cannot download drivers for it?

Thanks for your help...

Have you verified that you have the latest drivers for your hardware?

Why can't you download drivers? Explain how that is being done.

Have you tried the W7 troubleshooter?

Fred, Welcome to the Seven Forums.
Could you please give us you system specs, especially your video card. This would help us answer your questions.

If you used the video drivers offered by MS then they may not be up to date. Check the Nvidia web site for new drivers. I am going to pop over to the site to see what version my drivers are on at this time. Will get back in a few minutes. :)

Back, the latest drivers are: 191.07 (64 bit system, and Geforce 8800 GT OC card), dated 10/5/2009.

Thank you both for your response. The device is an Intel Easy Web Cam (C110). I am currently using WinXP because of the media problem. My Firmware is Nvidia 8300 GeForce.

With Win 7 installed, the device manager labels the web cam as 'other device' when I run 'update driver' it tells me no driver can be found. Manual install does not find anything, web cam is not listed as a possible device. When I try to find drivers all I get is offers for a driver manager that I do not want. Intel lists no drivers and because the device was not included with the computer, Dell lists no drivers for it.

List all models: All 32 or 16 Bit, no 64? Driver version: 6.14.112.9107 (NVIDIA)

My computer; Dell XPS 410/910 running a samsung 23" monitor. Lee, not sure what other specs you might want? Please specify. Thanks. Hopefully this will be enough.

Appreciate your help...

When you say Dell XPS 32bit system, is it actually 32bit?

Because I don't think a 64bit operating system would properly if at all when installed on a 32bit system... I haven't tried so wouldn't know for sure, just guessing...

I'm sure an XPS would be 64bit anyways, but just to be sure..

According to Dell, if a clean install is done a 64 bit will work on a 32 bit system. I purchased my XPS in august of 2007. It is a 32 bit system. I have a friend who purchased a Dell with Vista 32 bit, they also tried to sell me Vista and I told them I would look elsewhere, they gave me the XP OS. Everything is fine with win 7 except those problems I listed. I am thinking, I watch TV and Movies on the net, Fancast, hulu and others, my laptop, (HP Pavilion - July 2009), is a Vista 64B with a clean install of win7 and it works fine.

Although you can install a 32-bit operating system on a computer that has a 64-bit CPU, you cannot install a 64-bit operating system on a computer that has a 32-bit CPU.
Got this info from..
Installation choices for 64-bit consumer versions of Windows Vista

Edit:- I think your disc probably has both the 32bit and 64bit versions on, maybe you have 2 discs? I just read that retail would ship with both versions... I think if it was on the same disc maybe it would automatically choose the one depending on what your CPU is?

It ships with two disks each clearly marked 32 bit or 64 bit.

This I do know - in order to run a 64 bit OS, you need 64 bit hardware. A 32 bit OS can be run on 64 bit hardware but 64 bit software will not run on 32 bit hardware.

I have found the problem with my computer. Although I have a 32 bit system running 4 GB ram, it is not enough ram to run the 64 bit system because of the need for more ram with 64 bit. My Laptop is a 64 B system (Vista) with a clean install of win 7, it runs fine because it was a 64 bit system to begin with.

Still, I'm puzzled by win7 pro 32B system not running on the XPS?

Swamson Photos; the Win7 OS is equipped with drivers for most everything. My Printer, HP Photosmart C5280 actually downloads drivers from MS and runs fine on either 32 or 64 bit. I think driver programmers can and do make adjustments in their firmware/software.

Fred, sorry about not getting back sooner.

If you computer is a 32 bit system it will not run a 64 bit OS (just won't do it). A 32 bit OS (regardless of which one) will only us 3.25 gigs of memory regardless of how much is installed. A 64 bit OS will us up to 128 bits of memory depending on the MB. Now if you have a 64 bit system and are running a 32 bit OS it will only use 3.25 gigs of memory even it you have more than that on your MB.

Now the latest driver for your video card is Nvidia 191.07 which you can download from their web site. It would appear that you are running a 32 bit system so download the 32 bit drivers. Good Luck :)

We both have given you clear information and advise, yet are told something we know is just not true. I cannot help people who refuse to listen...I am doing this out of the goodness of my heart, to be helpful, and, sorry to say, I cannot and will not help those who I percieve as not willing to take advise.

I am sure someone will, I will move on to help others who listen.

Good luck.

Hi Lee, wanted you to know. I reinstalled win7 32B and got the drivers for NVidia, that you mentioned, all is working fine. I can live without the webcam for awhile... Thanks for the help...

Lee, (and everyone else), so you know, I did install both 64 and 32 bit win7U on my Dell 32 bit OS and it ran fine with the only problem being the media and web cam. Win7 will create two file directories, one 64B and the other 32B, so it is able to run 32B apps. I ran the pre-release and final-evaluation versions as a tester. I could not get any help from MS when I emailed them. However drivers were updated on a regular basis bring my computer further along with time.

Hardware will run as long as it has drivers. And, IF you do a clean install of the Win7 64B OS, it WILL run, guaranteed. BTW, I tested Win7 64B and 32B on both my Dell desktop and my HP laptop.

Happy computing. And, Lee, if you had anything to do with the drivers for my web cam, thank you. My computer is running great!

Swanson,

I believe that Fred may have just not realized that his system supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7. This is why he could install both. Since his system originally came with 32-bit Windows 7, he may have called it a 32-bit system by mistake without knowing that there is a difference between what the operating system is and what the hardare actually supports. That's all.

Brink; thanks. My Dell XPS is a 32 bit system. I have finally found the information on migrating from 32B to 64B and the answer is in the above link.

Brink, more info; I bought my computer in 2007 from Dell. It was a (XPS) Vista Machine and I told them I wanted XP not Vista, because of the problems with Vista. They hesitated but when I told them I would look elsewhere they sold me the system.

Obviously their new Intel dual core processors are capable of running 32 or 64 bit systems. As my system met migration from 32 to 64B and drivers were updated, to my last piece of hardware, everything is now working. I'm not sure where you are but I will invite you to come and witness my computer operating a 64B system.

The fact of the upgrade not having the ability to migrate 32 to 64B is no surprise, the upgrade is least expensive and a giveaway for most recent systems, (until final release), why would Microsoft shoot themselves in the foot? Not when there's money to be made! :-)

Thanks again,

Fred

When we refer to system we refer to the hardware.
When we refer to OS, we refer to the Operating System, in this case Windows 7.
One can install either a 32 bit OS or a 64 bit OS on a 64 bit system. One cannot however install a 64 bit OS on a 32 bit system. You therefore have a 64 bit system as a 64 bit OS is installed.

Nothing in the link you pointed to says anything different (unless it also is confusing OS with system).

It is a very important distinction to make, which is why Brink and I keep stating it.
