I apologize for going off topic. I am trying to learn win 7. I have aquired two Associates Degrees in networking. But, these degrees were aquired using and studying win xp. Are there any reliable resources that I can read or even study to get caught up on Win 7? I do not have any money to pay for any on line courses as my wife has stage 3 breast cancer and has to have Chemo for a year. I tried to get a computer/laptop with win 7 as a graduation present but to no avail. This was when my wife was diagnosed. Or, if anyone has a desktop/laptop they would like to give away, Lapotp preferred would be apprieciated. That can handle win 7 ultimate ( Ha, Ha) on the desktop/laptop.

Thank you in advance for any recomendation on resouces for win 7.

Still Learning, Learning Still

Hi,

You could check with the Win 7 upgrade advisor if your hardware is compatible with Windows 7, you then would just need to buy it (although I presume you are pretty much broke, from what I get from your post).

I don't think many people would be willing to give a computer for free, especially over the internet. You can find computers with Win 7 for very cheap nowadays though. I remember seeing one for $100 at a local pawn shop here, so you probably could have a similar deal on your end.

As for learning Win 7, there are plenty of tutorials on this forum, but you can't practice much if you don't have the OS installed.

I hope your wife gets better soon, cancer is no small thing.

Hello currtiswardwell Welcome to the Seven Forums! and the best place to learn a great deal about Windows 7 in general! :D

The first place you can start believe or not is in the tutorial section here at SF! The various guides explain how to many things in the newer Windows version as a start!

The easiest way to get 7 would be purchase of an upgrade disk(low cost option) and perhaps setting up a dual boot of 7 with XP in order to keep the present XP installation. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html

Gee there's one guide right there to start you off! That will cover the 7 install before as well as after XP goes on since you already have XP installed. Another one is comparing the different editions of 7 as far as what they are capable of as far as support and features included. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/14422-compare-windows-7-editions.html

Once you are able to upgrade into 7 at some point depending on which edition such as the Pro or Ultimate editions in particular for desktop/laptop/netbooks even the Microsoft Virtual PC or VMLite Workstation are two options for installing and running the new XP Mode allowing you to run XP desktop apps on 7 by way of a Virtual Machine(VM).

As far as your better half and that form of cancer I have a friend who lost a sibling to that. Cost is never an issue when trying to prevail over that disease! You be strong for her to help her through this.

I thank you for your support soncerning my wife. As far as Win 7, I have ran the upgrade advisor and most of my hardware is not compatible with Win 7. Concerning a desktop/laptop I was just joking about getting one for free. However, still praying for one. Using the turtorials is a good idea but, I am a hands on type of person, I have to read it, hear it, do it, that is how I learn.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this site and your continued support.

Hello Curtis.

First off, may I offer my support as your wife fights this disease. Treatments and survival rates are improving all the times so with your help and that of her medical team I'm sure she'll get through this.

As well as the great tutorials on here, YouTube videos provide a valuable resource if you want more than just ploughing through a book.

If you need more help, don't hesitate to post, there are plenty of good people about only too willing to help out.

The great thing is the fact we have people from many different time zones around at some time or other so you shouldn't have to wait too long for a reply.

One thing I found when putting a temp 32bit 7 install on an old XP case was all of the XP drivers worked! The old case saw a 128mb GeForce FX5200 video card and Realtek onboard 4 channel(front, rear pairs) sound. Even the chipset drivers worked.

That may have been a fluke seeing everything work like that. But it showed it can happen at times.

As far as reviewing the guides even without 7 running there you can learn what has seen changes in Windows 7 being two versions newer then XP. The guides not only explain how things are done but also show what is different about 7 as you go along.

As far as being the "hands on" type I know that one well here! In fact when anyone has a problem guess who gets drafted to solve it?! :D
