Win 7 Session Closes

I use Windows 7 on a VM as my primary workstation. If my VPN connection closes and the connection to the VM is lost then the session is lost. With XP I could always reconnect to the VM with all of my apps, files, etc running. Is there anyway to keep the same functionality with Win 7? Thanks.

Is there not an option to keep the VM on stand by when it closes instead of a complete shutdown?

Im pretty sure there's one in VMWare
