Win 7 shutting down unexpectedly

After years of great performance my dual core machine with Win 7 (since Feb) is now shutting down at random times each day...........once or twice or more each day. This started last week and is totally new and different to me. I can't seem to identify any software or hardware changes that could have triggered this. I'm wonderng if some hardware failure is happening to think about. What would trigger shutdowns at random times?

Does it happen with a clean boot.? If not follow the instructions

Does it happen is safe mode? If not post

Can you be overheating?

If you type device manager in search, do you see any yellow waring markers by the various devices?

Install anything new, recently?

Have you run a malware and antivirus scan. Download malwarebytes.

Yes, new install

Yes, I've installed a new 15' USB cable to connect a new Canon scanner. Also for several days Win 7 has been telling me that it is ignoring a usb device that "is not identified". I've noticed that it seems disconnected now but can't identify the device. Incidentally, the scanner is working perfectly at that distance. Thanks for the help.

New development

I've just discovered that this problem goes away when I keep the machine from going to sleep. I've set the sleep control to "never" and now it stays on all day without a problem.

I've not a clue what this means but I'm assuming there must be something wrong with my Win 7 installation now. Win 7 has run flawlessy for months until this problem began about a week or so ago. It could have started after I installed the scanner I mentioned before or did something else recently.

Try disabling hybrid sleep from your power options menu, then you should be able to use the sleep setting as usual.

What is "hybrid sleep"?

I've altered a few of the options in the "advanced settings" power menu to remove some of the features that affect sleep..........but I'm sure ignorant of what you mean by "hybrid sleep" in the "power options" menu. Could you explain that to me please? Thanks.

Does anyone know if Hybrid Sleep is really the problem? If so, why? Per the tutorial, it is just saves files/states prior to sleep...

I am another Windows 7 user with a similar or same problem: this am I find my computer with the power light on but unresponsive, which has been happening ocassionally . When I power down, count to 10 & reboot, all seems OK, but I have the error "The previous system shutdown at 7:23:57 PM on ‎6/‎20/‎2015 was unexpected". I am rebooting at 08:33:18 AM 6/21.
