Solved Win 7 Sp1 back up files

I have had Win 7 SP1 installed now for about a month with no problems. Last night I decided that I would delete the 920Mg. backup files with the disk cleanup tool. Every thing went fine. Every thing was working. After restarting the PC, Windows loaded, Desktop looked OK. When I tried to move my mouse it wouldn't. I had no keyboard. All my USB devices didn't work. I tried rebooting a few times with no success. I tried setting the Bios back to default. That didn't work either. I tried doing a windows repair with the system DVD. That didn't work. I finally got it to work by doing a system restore from just before the cleanup. I have the 920Mg files back now, but I'm afraid to delete them again. Any one else had this problem? Am I stuck with these files? I have Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I have Intel I7 Processor and 8 Gig. ram. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello Clint, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have enough free space on the HDD, then it would be safer to just leave the backup files alone.

If not, then be sure to create a restore point first to be extra safe. You might see if doing OPTION TWO in the tutorial instead may work better for you.

I made a couple of images prior to running:
windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe
to install SP1 (win 7 x64 Home Premium)
followed by a sfc/Scannow - a few files needed fixing.
then used essentially Option 1 to get rid of the SP1 backup files.

Everthing appears to be working fine for some time now.

Doing it this way with a system image (not just a restore point) may be a safer way to experiment.

Thanks to both of you guys for the quick replies. I ran the sfc /scannow and did create a restore point. I did option 2 and ran sfc /scannow again. This time it found errors and made repairs. It put the results in the cbs.log file ( I think that was the name of it ). I looked at it and didn't know what I was looking at, but every thing seems to be working now. I did the disk cleanup tool again and there are no files in the backup files list. I don't see a big difference in HD space recovered as others have reported. It may be in the restore points or the cbs.log file. I have put a check mark in temp files in the disk cleanup tool. After I run it, it says empty. But when I run Crapcleaner there is about 100 meg. of temp files listed. Is it safe to delete them with Crapcleaner? Thanks again Guys.

Yes, it's usually safe to delete the junk the CCleaner finds when using the default settings of the "Cleaner" option.
