Win 7 SP1 language problems

After installing Win 7 SP1, many applications and websites do not appear in English or any other language, but in some language which resembles Wingdings. MS Word, Notepad, websites appear in Wingdings. MS Excel is the only program to appear in English. After re-installing Win 7 (without SP1) everything is again in English. But, after installing SP1 again, same problem. I'd appreciate any thoughts, including which updates of SP1 I might be able to install without problems. Thanks.

I can't think why, but it seems as though SP1 is corrupting your fonts folder.

You could try running the Windows Update Readiness Tool, which should iron out any difficulties with installing updates.

When you've done that re-install SP1 if you haven't already done so, and then check your Fonts folder in Control Panel. If it is still corrupted and you can access another computer, copy and paste the contents of that computer's fonts folder to yours.

You could also try running System File Checker:

For Vista and Windows 7 only:

• Click on Start, type command prompt.
• Right click on Command Prompt at the top of the window and select Run as Administrator.

For XP only:

• Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories.
• Click on Command Prompt

For XP, Vista and Windows 7:

• In the Command Prompt Window, type (or copy and paste) sfc /scannow and press Enter.

Vista and Windows 7 tell you if there were any problems, XP does not. You can examine the SFC results as follows:

Open a Command Prompt (does not have to be as Administrator):

• Type (or copy and paste) findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt and press Enter.
• Type (or copy and paste) notepad sfcdetails.txt and press Enter.

Thanks, but....

I'm new to both this site and blogging in general. So, first: thanks for your help. Second (my ignorance is showing), but, although my desktop PC has the problem, and I have a laptop at my left elbow, I'm unsure how to copy and paste the contents of my laptop's fonts folder to my desktop's. Help. Thanks again. John

If you have an USB stick, just copy the fonts folder from the laptop to the stick, then...well, you can imagine the rest.
Another option is to connect the two computers via HomeGroup.

Try running sfc /scannow first as I posted earlier. Usually fixes problems like this.
