Win 7 SSD and AHCI installation for HD - No optical access - Warning!

Hi,

Bought Kingston 260GB SSD-great-to speed up old Athlon system. Works. For two other WD HDs I decided to follow instructions to instal AHCI via REGEDIT as per a perfect link. Downloaded latest AHCI driver for mobo, etc.

The clever instructions told me optical drives MAY/MAY NOT work with AHCI installed! Ignored that. By the way, AHCI orders disk requests like a lift (elevator) algorithm, so the heads do not perform a horrid disk dance and that speeds up disk performance.

Now after an equally horrid side-by-side Win7 error lost access to Mozilla/Office and had an ad/porno attack decided to reload Win7 - no optical drive.

Main reason for this thread is is a warning to anyone trying to load AHCI or AHCI/RAID as it may not work for you. Grabbed another PC and loaded that one anew!

As I want to sell that non-optical PC now, how can I get it going again? Any suggestions, please? Trying to boot it via a USB stick? Will that give me access to the optical?

Check the BIOS, there may be an option to set some of the SATA ports to IDE mode for optical drives.

What tinmar49 said is true. I was attempting to install Win7 on a laptop configured as AHCI and it would not boot to optical disk drive. Changed BIOS setting for that drive to IDE and it worked. Returned setting to AHCI when install was completed and all is fine
