I find this really odd, my pc ran win vista (32 bit)rather well. My rig is a HP laptop dv9000z amd turion c2 2.3 Ghz, 3 gb ram, nvidia geforce 8400 m graphics. I have >200 gb of free space on my primary hard drive. While running iTunes and google chrome (or any other web browser, it happens less frequently with chrome) win 7 (32 bit) will almost freeze up. It's rather weird, I don't know how to describe it because 7 isn't freezing the way I normaly expect. Both applicatios at the same time just seem to stop working and become unresponsive. I try to change the song in itunes or scroll a page in chrome and nothing happens (I can still move my mouse and change windows sometimes) same happens when I try ctrl alt del or the [x] in the taskbar or the physical window.

This also happens when I could be running just one app or many, and it doesn't seem to be unique to one particular application.

If I give my computer about 5-10 minutes it will start workng again.
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
Sean

I've noticed this some times with FF 3.5, foobar2000, maybe MPC-HC. All of those are 32bit apps in my x64 W7. However I have not noticed this in WoW in fullscreen, I have not tried WoW in windowed mode.

Are you saying that my Unresponsiveness is because of 32 bit apps, but i'm running a 32 bit OS. And this stalling happens with games too, Like FSX.

I'm running the evaluation copy 7100

If this keeps up, there is no point for me to look any further than vista

Right click on your hdd.

Go to properties

Untick the indexing box there.

Also, you should uprgrade to build 7600

This problem STARTED for me with 7600.

7100 never did this. On same machine with same hardware and drivers /except/ moving to an SSD (X-25M) for the root drive.

It happens half the time before the login screen and the other half the time sometime after. And as other have reported; Frequently when idle but not always!

Symptoms are, the app you are using seems to freeze, but not the mouse, and other things are still running ok Clock gadget etc. Apps then freeze one by one slowly over several seconds, then finally the mouse, then the mouse cursor (if it was on the animated wait cursor), then the HD light finally comes on and stays on unblinking. THe entire thing can take like 20 seconds or more to get to that point.

I've only once seen it clear itself but I'm not a fan of waiting 5-10-30 minutes for it to do so so I ususaly have to give it the one finger salute.

May be motherboard related (I did install the motherboard drivers for network and "storage"), may be related to the SSD, the MUCH higher throughput. (Photoshop launches in 1.5 esconds if you can believe that) May be stressing MB drivers or there may be an actual problem in the RTM that affects a certain number of people "randomly".

I have had indexing off since the begining so that's not it.

I tried the upping of the voltage on the "SPP" in the BIOS as some have suggested, that didn't do it. Actually seemed to get worse.

I recently turned off ALL power management settings in the advanced power management config page. Have yet to see if that has any effect.

It's too bad, the 7100 worked perfectly for me for months, this and another issue for another thread are turning testing of the RTM into a bit of a dissapointment :(

But if I find the cause eventually I'll post back.

Yes, all this seems about right. I have noticed it since Beta test.
my solution.

start -> cmd (run as admin) @ popup
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

almost instantly you will see a big difference.

the normal setting for this is different.

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=default

Snuffy; I'll give it a try, but talk about irony, my applications froze upon me opening command prompt

TGSoldier; how do I get 7600?

That fix (Netsh commands) is for slow internet or slow local net shares which can appear like stalling but are generally contained and short lived and frequently just SLOW rather than compeltely halted.

It may or may not be the OPs problem, another lag/lockup problem that seems very common is to have the entire OS slowly seize up for several minutes.

Since the OP mentioned it happening in net apps, it could be the auto tuning, but if it happens in general it's more likely the other problem which doesn't seem to have a real airtight fix yet.
