Win 7 Ult Sleep/Hibernation problems

Just acquired a rather tired Medion Aloya E7214 (wanted a 17" screen for video watching)
Reinstalled Win 7 x86 (Ult) and did all the updates
All seems to work fine except for Sleep/Hibernate

If either is selected from the start menu, the process seems to start, the screen goes blank and nothing else happens: The fan stays on, the indicator lights stay on the power light stays on the fan whirrs so I have to do long press to switch off and then start up again.
- If I have chosen sleep, then when it starts up, and I get initial BIOS selection screen then blank then reboot, the BIOS select then blank then reboot. To get out of this loop I have to so a system repair (which finds not problems but does allow the system to restart)
- If I have chosen Hibernate, then when it starts up it will say resuming and, it does indeed resume with the apps still running.

How to I get Sleep/Hibernate to close the comput er down properly

Hi, I am trying to resolve a win 7 sleep issue at mo' without much success....

Have you tried checking hibernate/sleep supported states with "powercfg -a" using command prompt in administrator mode - will give you a clue to how machine is set up.
just a struggling amateur.

Sleep states available: Standby (S3) Hibernate Hybrid sleep
S1 and S2 are not available.

So I can understand it doing nothing but not going half way and getting stuck!
