Win 7 Ultimate Signature Edition BSODs

John,

I checked my version of Vipre against their website and found it was a few revisions behind, so I downloaded the newest one, uninstalled the old one, rebooted, ran Ccleaner to clean up the registry, installed the new one and rebooted again. When it came back up, the 32 bit version of IE would not work at all, but the 64 bit version would. A few google searches turned up some "fixes" but none of them worked. So, after a couple of system restores, I got it working again, but now I've got the old version of Vipre again. So, when I get home tonight, I'll try that process again. Wish me luck.

As for the outdated drivers that you listed, I checked them and they seem to be related to the TV tuner card that I have installed. I bought mine from Asus (PHC3-100), but it looks like they just re-labeled someone else's card. Anyway, this model is not supported for Windows 7, so I have disabled it in the device manager until I can crack the case and take it out. If it is those drivers, will just disabling it stop the crashes or do I need to uninstall the drivers and then the card?

By the way, if I continue to have crashes, I'll give Sunbelt a call. Their customer support is supposedly fantastic, although I've never had to use it, until now. If I can get Vipre working correctly, should I re-run the driver verifier? Or, if I can't get it working, can you reccommend an AV program? I've been using Vipre for a couple of years and love it, and as I said earlier, I've got a site license and have it running on lots of computers ranging from XP to Vista to Windows 7. This is the only computer that I've had problems with and, of course, it's my computer that it happened to! Very frustrating. I love this computer!

Thanks for all your help. I'll report in later tonight.

It's entirely possible that there's something conflicting with the Vipre/CounterSpy software - either a virus or another program. Something is causing it to have problems (with the 32 bit IE) when you update it to the most current version.

The TV Tuner should be OK if it's disabled (I had one disabled on my Vista system for 3 years before I took it out). If you'd like, you can disable those drivers from loading by using this free program: Autoruns for Windows

I'd leave this one to SunBelt, they'll have more experience with these issues than we will. If they can't help, then post back and we'll worry it to death on our own.

I would start uninstalling the extra programs one by one and see if the problems goes away. It sounds like a program or driver problem.

John,

Here's where I am: after the system restores, I got IE working correctly. Then I "uninstalled" the TV tuner card in the device manager. After that, I upgraded Vipre again with no side effects. It's been about four days and no BSODs. Now, was it Vipre or the tuner card? Hard to say at this point, but if I go a few more days with no issues, I may enable the tuner card just to see what happens. I really do appreciate all of your help. Give me a few more days and I'll mark this as resolved!

Belikexp,

Just for giggles, I ran your stress test and passed with flying colors (five passes, high stress). As for programs, I keep my system pretty clean. If I'm not using a program, it gets uninstalled.

Thanks,

Joe
