G'day,
Yesterday evening, 14 Dec., when shutting down the computer, 10 updates were received. This morning, 15 Dec., when booting up for the first time, I was presented with the green screen that said "Preparing to Configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." It has been sitting there like that for over an hour and a half. I think something may have gone wrong. What should I do? Please advise. All help will be greatly appreciated.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, i5 3.4 Ghz, 8Gb RAM.

Cheers,
Fritz

A great christmas present from Microsoft it seems.

I have the same kind of problem as you pivo11. I was just installing the same updates on my PC, the system lost connection to the monitor and it flashed the red light for hard drive. I waited for some moments but it seemed the system was stuck. So I did a hard reboot. Now my system won't even give me any beeps. If I turn it on hard drive light will flicker and fans start but nothing happens.

Any ideas what has caused this and what should be done?

Edit: Windows 7 Hope Premium 64bit

Edit 2: Well, I disconnected all devices except the keyboard and let it run for a little longer and suddenly the computer posted and booted again. Installed the updates with no problem and seems to be working... weird.

Same here

I have a laptop Dell XPS M1530 and it wouldn't start. I just removed my wireless mouse adapter and it started.

Folks. Thanks for the replies. I finally forced a shutdown and restarted in "Safe" mode. Got a "Problem configuring windows updates; reverting changes" message and from there it took another five minutes before all went back to normal, as far as I could see. Then I got a popup window that stated that Windows needed to restart the computer so that the updates could take effect. I did that and got exactly the same message as before; "Preparing to Configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer." However, this time after 30 seconds or so, the machine started and is working fine. (I hope). I have no idea what caused this other than it must have been one of the 10 updates I received on 14-15 Dec.

Cheers,
Fritz
