Hi everyone,
Hope that someone maybe able to advise or clear up some queries I have!?

1 - I have XP as my current OS, though I have trialled Win 7 and want to purchase it. Will 'Win 7 Upgrade' work over my XP install?

I understand that it will, from forums I've been reading up on, though thought this would be the place to ask for sure!

2 - Once I have purchased and upgraded to Win 7, what if I then want to do a re-install of Win 7 at some stage in the future? Will I have to re-install XP or will Win 7 clean install back over itself with no problem?

May sound like dum questions, but I've never purchased an Upgrade version of Software before.

Cheers!

No you will not be able to upgrade from XP, the best you will be able to do is install without formating the XP partition and then it will place XP in a folder called Windows.old.

Once Windows 7 is installed you can then retreive any documents or files from there but you will need to install all your drivers and programs from scratch.

So do you mean by that will need to purchase a full edition of win 7 not an upgrade version?

once you purchase win 7 (full or upgrade?) it should work. the threads are right. WIn 7 (w legit serial key) should install clean (if its a full not upgrade version). these are hardly dumb questions there are thousands of people asking the exact same questions.

Hope this clears it up a bit.

If you get the win7 upgrade disk, you'll need to run the disk while you are inside XP. When it installs it will do a clean install since you are running XP, and it will count as an upgrade, because since you ran the upgrade media inside XP, it verified that you were eligible for upgrade. Many people will tell you a clean install doesn't count as an upgrade, but it does with XP because the upgrade path provided by MS says it will clean install when you run the upgrade disk. The proof is in the quote that sergio posted and a call that I made to microsoft last week.

delayed reply everyone who posted, had 'commitments' last night and was banned from the pc :(.

So, the answer is a yes to the fact that I can use an upgrade version of 7 on my xp os. Great, will save me some cash!

What about if I need to do a clean rebuild as some point in the future, will I need to then re-install xp to upgrade again (surely not) or will I just be able to put my Upgrade disc back in then to a rebuild?

Further to that, if I wack in a new Hard drive (which is likely as mine needs replacing in the not to distant future) will I need to insall XP onto that drive to do an install of win7?

cheers for the advise all!

There is always the double install method with the upgrade disks, so if you ever find yourself without your XP for some reason, Heres what you would do.
Clean install using the upgrade disk, don't allow it to activate, and don;t put in your key for this installation.
Once 7 is installed, put the upgrade disk back in, and run setup from inside the freshly installed 7, and choose the upgrade option this time. Once the upgrade from 7 to 7 is done, then you can put your key in and it will activate.
