Hi Guys, I've just upgraded to 7100 and now I can't get more than
3 megabits download. I normally get about 9.6 on Virgin Media using internet speed tests. Running through Netgear WGR-R16 router.
Upload seem about right. I've tried resetting the router but it makes no difference. Any help guy?

find a "web100" speedtest app, and make sure you do the test in advanced mode... if you cant find one or your ISP doesnt have one, let me know and i'll provide one from my ISP.

also check duplex settings as i have notice win7 having now trying different audio drivers different from the beta, so this could be the case for adapter drivers as well. Reinstall from manufacturer if you can, this is likely your problem, not a hardware issue it seems.

Btw, Digger, how do you update a router driver? I have the latest driver for my Netgear WGR614 v7, but I can't figure out how to install it.

Thanks

Jim

Heya Jim,

you are speaking of firmware for your router. The version should be somewhere on your configuration browser ie; 192.168.1.1 ... go to netgear and compare. Two things i will give advice about, first, always check the change log of the firmware, see whats new, updated, so on. Then make up your mind if you first really need it. If so, then you can use tftp2.exe and upload it manually to the router. The browser also usually has a built in update itself. I dont trust the browser even tho it may seem more convienant.

You will have to provide the router admin pass to upload, which shouldnt take that long at all, tho be patient. The router will be doing alot of work after the file is uploaded. To be on the safest side, give about 3 min, it will most likely reboot itself after updating. I then unplug it for a few minutes, and plug-in/reboot it (cold/hard boot). Just to make sure everything is a go and systems set... key thing to remember is patience, be in no hurry when doing this, or else you will be driving to wal-mart/best buy before the night is over with.

Thank you, Digger

Hi Digger, thank you for your feedback. I'd already found the browser way of updating and went ahead with it before I got your info. I then went ahead with the evaluation tool that you kindly supplied a link for, and it passed all tests except one: the UPnP test failed, it reported that this was not supported. Is this a real problem? I must say that everything appears to be running ok. I updated 7077 to 7100.The initial problem I had with reduced bandwidth seem to have corrected itself. I am getting normal results with broadband speed tests.

Result: The operating system is Windows Vista
The firewall is enabled
Exceptions are allowed by the firewall
UPnP is enabled by the firewall
UPnP services are running
UPnP Discovery is enabled

Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it.:D

no Jim, not a real problem, as i had same report, as i have it turned off on the network currently... so it does report correctly. I just tossed out this link mostly cuz it was an MS tool, and atleast by going thru this, my conscience is clear and that option is now exhausted.

Here is another tip to try, which i have, only to find that it only helped not cure the problem, or atleast it seemed that way yesterday and last night. But then i still came up d/c'd after a period of time. Try going into the router and changing the beacon interval to 50ms. See what happens. I could atleast stress out the network a bit longer, but once i met the limit and kept the limit, it wouldnt last too long.

Next time you do a troublshoot, see if you can find the report ( .etl file) and save that. I'm no guru on those files, but maybe someone here is. I just read my report the long user friendly way thru the window viewing details. Finding that the problem only existed with the adapter, not with the router/AP at all. But this is only a "glorified RC" at best, so its reporting may not even be right itself... my trust with this OS is dropping like a rock nowadays.
