can u upgrade to win 8 pro as a clean install but with out having windows 7 ultimate installed IE new formatted hd or partition start win 8 install then that install ask for win 7 disk for verification???

has anyone tried this ?

is it just me been a bit old school or have i missed something ?? a upgrade use to mean to me, that u had the last operating system to be able to upgrade to the new one at a premium rate? ....... isn't this what id be doing with this upgrade ??? or is it a stand alone new OS

When you purchase a Windows 8 upgrade using the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, then you must run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant in the previous OS (ex: Windows 7) for it to be able to check and make sure you have a qualifying OS to be eligible to purchase and download the Windows 8 upgrade.

After you have it downloaded, you can install it how you like so long as you no longer have the qualifying OS activated anymore.

OK so in lay man terms, i must have qualified for win 8 pro (already bought and downloaded £24.99) because i had win 7 ultimate?

off subject if i just had win 7 basic would i of only qualified for win 8 basic and had to buy the pro update pack approx £49.00 ish ??

and why would Microsoft not want me to have win 7 installed any more ??? makes no sense i can see

To qualify for the cheaper Windows 8 upgrade copy instead of a more expensive full or system builder copy, you would need to already own either XP SP3, Vista, or Windows 7.

When you install the Windows 8 upgrade you are agreeing to the EULA to no longer have the specific product key of the qualifying OS (XP SP3, Vista, or Windows 7) activated for the lower price. If you uninstall the Windows 8 upgrade, then you can use the qualifying OS product key again.

If you can still have say Windows 7 installed and the Windows 8 upgrade installed at the same time if you have another product key to activate with other than the one you used to qualify for the Windows 8 upgrade. You could also purchase a more expensive system builder copy of Windows 8 to be able to keep both Windows 7 and Windows 8 installed and activated at the same time.

It's like this because you can't have your cake and eat it for the price break on a Windows 8 upgrade VS more expensive full copy.

but that's not how i felt the upgrade was promoted i feel cheated now so iv paid £24.99 just to see how rubbish win 8 is before i go bk to win 7

I'm not sure how you feel cheated? Please elaborate.

It's a lot cheaper in price than Windows 7 was when it first came out.

If you just wanted an evaluation copy to see how you like Windows 8 first, then you could have downloaded Windows 8 Enterprise to try for free for 90-days.

A Windows 8 upgrade copy is the same as all Windows upgrade copies have always been. You get a cheaper priced upgrade VS full priced copy by agreeing to the EULA to no longer have the previous installation activated and replace it with the upgrade. Thus you upgraded your installation from say Windows 7 to Windows 8.

If you don't wish to continue using the Windows 8 upgrade, then you could simple uninstall it, then be eligible to reinstall and activate your Windows 7 again.
