Win10 Won't Install

I'm not sure where to post this thread, or even if I should be posting it at SevenForums, but I'm not a member of any Win10 forum yet, and since I can't get it to install, I figured I'd start here.

I just tried installing Win10 over my Win7 installation because I was hoping to keep all my programs and settings. This is the error I received:

================
0xC1900101 - 0x20007
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_DRIVERS operation
================

I'm hoping there's a way I can correct this situation within Win7 so I can complete the installation. Any recommendations?

I'm a musician and a composer, so this PC is used primarily as a digital audio workstation (DAW), so sound is king. I'm also a photographer, so I also make use of it for image processing. I find the ATI Radion on the MoBo to be perfectly adequate in this respect and the AOC 22" monitor to be respectable. It's about time for an upgrade, though.
Hi cooltouch,

See if I can help you.

What do you mean "installing Win10 over my Win7 installation"?

Do you mean in place upgrade?

Where did you obtain Win10?

Did you run the System Upgrade Readiness Tool prior to your attempted upgrade?

Snick

If you're doing an in-place upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, there's no guarantee that all of your current programs will still work.
A few of them may no longer be there or may no longer work properly.

Windows 10 also has a lot of new settings, so even if you select the option to retain your current settings, you'll still need to change some of them.

Snick, sorry for not using the correct terminology. What I did was attempt to install Win10 from within Win7, using the Win10 setup.exe file. I obtained the disk file from the Microsoft website. I didn't run a System Upgrade Readiness Tool. It appeared that Win10 was doing that when I first loaded the install program.

flavalee, I'm prepared for the eventuality that not all my programs will run under Win10. However, the ones I consider most important are Win10 compatible. I look forward to changing settings as required.

If this is your first exposure to Windows 10, the number of settings that have increased and changed will boggle your mind.
I've had 5 years to become familiar and proficient with Windows 10, so I'm now able to change and edit settings much faster after an install of Windows 10.
I'll leave you with Snick.
Good luck.

No problem with the terminology. Just wanted to be sure we are talking about the same thing.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) is not the same thing that Win10 does with its compatibility check.

SURT- From Microsoft's Website - This tool is being offered because an inconsistency was found in the Windows servicing store which may prevent the successful installation of future updates, service packs, and software. This tool checks your computer for such inconsistencies and tries to resolve issues if found.

Hey Snick -- I ran the SURT -- actually, I ran it on a different computer that also wouldn't install Win10 -- but anyway, all it appeared to do was install the latest Hotfix (KB947821), which I had it do because I've been having some problems with this machine and I was hopeful this hotfix might fix them. Anyway, long story short, the Win10 install on this machine also errored out. This time it was an error during the PREPARE_FIRST_BOOT operation.

If I have to, I'll bite the bullet and do a fresh install of Win10, but it sure would be nice if I could keep the programs I use frequently and not have to reinstall everything. Also, some of the software peripherals I use have very annoying copyright protection schemes and whenever I have to reinstall it, it counts off the number of times the software can be installed again. I've been through one disk crash and one computer transfer so far. I think I have only one more install left with this stuff.

But putting all that aside, I'm thinking that this message Win10 delivers when it errors out can be helpful in solving the installation issues, yes? No? Maybe?

SURT creates a CheckSUR.log which is temporary in its original location.
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS
You'll have to run it again, locate the CheckSUR.log and upload please.
You can open it with Notepad if you wish to peruse it.
Worst case scenario, repair install win7 then in place upgrade Win10
;)
I'm triple booting Win10, Win7, & Linux Lite.

Just an aside from your main story:
================
0xC1900101 - 0x20007

================

Is that a typo error on your second line? There is no such error code listed.
You can have 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 or 0x80070490 – 0x20007 or something else?

Anyway, long story short, the Win10 install on this machine also errored out. This time it was an error during the PREPARE_FIRST_BOOT operation.

Again, there is no reference error code. An error code would help diagnose problem.

After a failed Windows 10 upgrade, you can go into C:\Windows\Panther directory and open two files Setuperr.log and Setupact.log, and locate problem specifics. This is particularly useful if the issue is to do with problematic device drivers.

Actually it is a valid error code....
Microsoft said:
To troubleshoot a failed upgrade that has returned a result code of 0xC1900101, analyze the extend code....

Extend codes can be matched to the phase and operation when an error occurred. To match an extend code to the phase and operation:

  1. Use the first digit to identify the phase (ex: 0x4000D = 4).
  2. Use the last two digits to identify the operation (ex: 0x4000D = 0D).
  3. Match the phase and operation to values in the tables provided below...
Upgrade error codes - Windows IT Pro - Windows Deployment | Microsoft Docs

But it tells you nothing we don't already know. The first digit 2 says SP_EXECUTION_SAFE_OS and the last two 07 is for SP_EXECUTION_OP_INSTALL_DRIVERS.

cooltouch,

Questions:
If you are working on one computer not in place upgrading, why would you run a recommended/suggested program on another computer then post?
How was that going to help fix the original computer issue you posted?
Are both your computers fully updated?

SURT is a diagnostic tool, not simply a hot fix. Yes, it does correct some issues, usually not everything unfortunately. As I stated it creates a CheckSUR.log. The log provides relevant data regarding missing or corrupt winsxs folders & files, botched Win Updates with corresponding registry error remnants.

With that said, would you please run SURT or preferably AutoSURT.exe from my OneDrive and post the CheckSUR.log that will be in the CBS folder that will appear on your desktop. If the CheckSUR.log is larger than 1MB, zip/compress it, and upload.

BTW: zip/compressed limit is 4MB.

Well! I must have an abbreviated list, because it is not on my list of error codes. So thank you Bree and Snick for pointing out the existence of that error code.

I still would recommend looking in C:\windows\panther directory for Setuperr.log and Setupact.log, as these would help diagnose which actual cause the Instillation process is referring to.

You're welcome. It is a good day we learned something. I always try Google and Bing searches as well as my repository of issues. Bing seems to produce results that Google doesn't regarding M$ products.

I agree with the Panther logs. I'm assuming OP has update errors to. Not sure if any updates have been installed.
I was inclined towards repair install win7, install updates, then in place upgrade to Win10.
Still curious as to OP running SURT on another computer. Guess I'll chalk that up to oh well.

Snick

Thank you Bree

I'll give the site a look see!

I'm still inclined to believe OP has issues with the current Win7 install; corrupt system folders/files, registry entry errors.

Won't know for sure until we see some logs as we all agree.
