WIN7.64 and BSOD - may have solution..

Good afternoon,

I have no science to back up my theory, but just day to day experience and a drop in the number of BSOD's - to near zero.

I'm running Win7(64) and two 500GB SSD's on a Dell laptop with 8GB RAM, 1GB VRAM. So I'm not short of horsepower <G>. Not running as RAID.

Machine runs FINE as long as I'm running Sun VirtualBox which in turn is running either Ubuntu 10.04 (64) or Win7(32) (I have some DOS programs that refuse to run in 64 bit Win).

I see NOTHING in my BIOS that I can tweak to eliminate BSOD's (and there were a variety, nothing ever consistent). Memory ALWAYS tests normal, too.

So.... VirtualBox with Win7(32) is always running minimized, as is my docked laptop running two 27" monitors.

I'm no dummy - I'll HAPPILY include a dumpfile! Interestingly, NO CRASHES while at work because I ran Sun VirtualBOX all day to access some DOS programs.

I head home, and sure as heck, no VirtualBox, and hello BSOD's! I'm attaching the latest one.

PS: Dell Covet M6500, and what I *THINK* are latest available drivers, mostly from Dell.

Now for some other troubleshooting. Do you get BSODs while VBox is running, but no virtual machines running?

Please update VBox to the latest version, if you have not already: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/3.2.4/VirtualBox-3.2.4-62467-Win.exe

Check in your BIOS for a CPU virtualization or hyperthreading option. Change it is you see one.

Already running latest Virtual Box, thanks. I'm not 100% certain but I **THINK** I need to be running an OS via VirtualBox to avoid BSOD. I'll go VirtualBox combat-mode tomorrow and see what happens <G>. I'm about to:
- check my BIOS, and
- enable driver verifier

PS: one of my colleagues wonders if Kingston SSD's are the reason for BSOD. Thoughts?

Anything is possible, but why would a SSD cause a BSOD while VBox is not running?

While we're at it, why would anything cause BSODs while VBox is not running?

You may see if a BIOS update cures things.

Well, THAT was messy! VERIFIER brought my system to its knees with immediate BSOD on startup. Didn't see any new additions in my windows/minidump folder, either. System Restore to get out of BSOD hell.

I can tell you running VirtualBox without any bringing up Ubuntu or Win7(32) also results in BSOD.

I've gone to BIOS and turned OFF my three choices beneath virtualization and things appear stable AND VirtualBox seems to work anyway.

When you tried your memory test, did you let it run for at least 5 passes?

Also, try running the test with either 2GB or 4GB at a time
