Win7 64-bit Desktop won't boot, stalls at Aswrvrt.sys on start-up?

Hey all,

I've got a desktop here with Win7 64-bit. It was acting strangely, but now I can't get it boot...just endlessly reboots in "normal" mode saying Windows failed to successfully start. When I try Safe Mode, it stops at Aswrvrt.sys, which I know is an Avast file. System Restores don't work at all to fix the problem (and the only two restore points on this machine are since the issues started anyway), and StartUp Repair doesn't do anything either.

Any folks have any suggestions? Thanks!

Second time in two days that I have seen this problem. As you know it is Avast, your anti virus. You have to uninstall, and then you can replace with M Security Essentials.
Do you have a install CD?

I can't uninstall Avast, as I can't get the machine to boot into Windows.

I have a Windows install CD, yes, but not sure if it will work for this machine.

If it is the same Edition and SP, this should work. You must keep in mind,, however that, anything that can go wrong usually does. What is the source of the CD?

I didn't have a legitimate copy of a Win7 cd, so it is a burnt copy I found online, supposedly allows for installing all versions (Home Premium, Professional, etc, etc), but the Windows key in question is legitimate (I never use non-legitimate keys and won't work on computers that do)

I DO have a legitimate Win7 Home Prem. DVD here, but it is 32-bit and this is a 64-bit machine, hence my need to use the other disk.

I am glad that you told me about the DVD. Forum policy dictates that there be no discussion regarding illegal copies of Seven. Since your copy is legit, we can discuss that.
When you bought the computer, did it have 7 already installed?
If yes, make and model of your computer please.

I didn't actually buy it, it's a friend of mine's. It did have Win7 on it. It's a Dell Inspiron, a newer model and has Win7 Home Prem 64-bit with SP1 installed. Going to try a Repair Install and see what happens!

You must have a CD with the same SP, 64bit and edition for the repair to work.

If I may jump in for a moment.

A repair install will also require a proper COA key. At least that has been the way it worked when I do Repair Installs.

I had a MS-certified Tech. friend link me to the Digital River download list of MS official Win7 SP1 installation disks, I am downloading one of those now to try a Repair Install. Should one of those work on this machine Layback?

@richC46 - the disk I am downloading is a Win7 Home Prem. SP1 64-bit disk, so it should be the same as installed on the machine.

The digital river should work. The CD does not have a key attached to it. If you are asked for a key, just give yours.

Well...ran into some issues. Can't do a Repair Install because the machine won't boot into Windows in any way, so did a format with a downloaded Digital River retail install disk for Win7 Home Prem SP1 64-bit....now I'm in this mess.....

Surely he meant Startup Repair. You wouldn't reinstall without at least trying Startup Repair from System Recovery Options and if it fails then try System Restore.

I am sorry you were not given the correct repairs. Twice in a row you were given repairs that obviously do not work when Win7 cannot repair.

I've done a startup repair, it fails. every time. System Restore fails as well, and the restore points (there were only 2 of them), were both from AFTER the problem started, so they were no help anyway. At any rate, I've reformatted the computer now, so I guess I'll close this thread...now I just have the "can't activate" issue in my other thread to worry about 9_9

We'll draw NoelDP's attention to it.....he's our local guru with activation, but I think the lack of COA sticker is going to be a deal breaker unfortunately. Lets see what he has to say.
