I can open Chrome only. Every other programme/shortcut gives a Missing File Association error. I cannot open regedit, explorer or system restore. I do have another machine to open files onto a USB if necessary.

Thanks Snick, I tried both options to no avail. If I double-click on a program icon I get the error:

"The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel".

Some programs do open with a double click - .pdf, chrome, .chm but most (I have not tried all 300) only open with 'Run as Administrator'. The file associations seem fine - it is the programs themselves that are not opening and System Restore fails to work.

I cannot pin this problem on a particular event as I do not use the machine regularly.

I hope this helps.
Regards,
Martin

Have you run sfc /scannow from Administrative CMD?

See if this re-associates your shortcuts.
Administrative CMD copy and paste

assoc.lnk=lnkfile

Thanks Snick, I will try the fixes. In the meantime I have gone through most programs/Properties/Advamced and set them to Run As Administrator which works with the exception of Corel and Paint Shop Pro which I may have to reinstall. I will come back to you once I have tried your suggestions.
Thanks again,
Martin
