win7 64bit and xp mode lan not working

Hi,
I'v read dozens of topics on this and tried so many times but with no success.
I have win7 pro 64bit, I'v installed xmode and want to setup network between the two (I need to use an old adsl modem to connect win7 to internet):
- I'v installed loopback on win7, set fixed IP to 192.168.0.2, getaway 192.168.0.1, inserted dns
- in integration for xpmode I'v set "internal network" (the is NO option to set loopback device here)
- on xpmode NIC with fixed IP 192.168.0.1, and set dns.
- I'v installed the adsl modem on xpmode and works fine (I'm using it now)

I'v checked that IP's are set correctly and they are...I'v disabled firewall on xpmode and on win7.
On win7 for the loopback device I get "undentified network" so I'v also tried setting it to private (in security options).

From xpmode if I ping win7 (192.168.0.2) all I get is timeout, from win7 if I ping xpmode (192.168.0.1) all I get is not reachable!!!

Please can you tell me what is wrong??? because I just can't find it!!!

Not the answer to the question - but an alternative solution -- if you can find an old RETAIL copy of XP then forget XP mode and use VMWARE player (Free) to install an XP Virtual Machine. If you enable the unity feature it will work just like XP mode but infinitely better.

A retail version of XP requires activation however --if you have an old PC you could move the XP system to the VM. If you can't get access to an old XP install disk then please excuse the post.

(Another possible advantage is that if you DO decide to install Windows 8 or whatever windows comes after that - your XP virtual machine will still work - XP mode support ENDS with W7).

Thanks...works fine...finally I can browse from win7 using the old modem on xp with vmware!

I'm still VERY curious to know for what odd reason it just wont work on xpmode since the settings I'v used are identical

XPmode is an application running under W7 and the virtualisation process is a bit different. VMware has its OWN set of Virtual hardware so as far as Windows is concerned the VM is using DIFFERENT hardware - in fact the Virtual machine doesn't even KNOW anything about the Host and is essentially a totally separate machine which should behave just like any other physical machine. XPmode does a lot of tricks to integrate the two at considerable performance costs and unbelievable complexity.

While it was designed as a tool for people migrating from XP to W7 I can't think of ANY single business that ever used it -- and most home users seem to be less than impressed with it anyway. The only bonus was that the XP came with the download -- running VMWARE required a separate copy of XP - but is so far superior I can't imagine why anybody is still using XPMODE.

Since businesses migrating from XP already had XP licenses IMO using say vmware player (FREE) is a far far better option for migration than XPmode for those that still need XP on the clients desktops.

Not a very technical answer but it'll have to do.

XP Mode felt rather poor to us compared to the VMWare'd version which acts 100% like Windows XP, managed to get ancient 16-bit games to run on XP-32 bit VMWare'd with sound, we were shocked and elated! [I use 7-64bit Ultimate]

XP Mode has no direct-x support either I am pretty sure.

XP Mode was not smooth if I recall from trying it, I know there was some reason it never got reinstalled after a wipe, but the VMWare is impressive and was not difficult to setup, plus you can backup the VMWare files and use them again.
