Win7 and XP sharing of specific files

I have a small network with 1 Win7 (called samson) and 2 XP machines (called media01 and media02) . I have a folder on my WIN7 machine that I want to share as read only with the media01 machine and also share (same folder) with media02 as read/write access.

On the Win7 machine, I right-click the folder and go to properties / sharing / advanced sharing / permissions. At his point I try to do an add but it will not take a machine name or a machine signon. How do I signify a machine or user I want to set permission for.

clincoln777, try not to let it get you too frustrated. Everything seems impossible, if you don't know how to do it. IT stuff requires specific knowledge, and you either know it or you don't. At any rate, I feel your pain. I do this stuff for a living and still run into walls sometimes.

In my opinion, the EASIEST way to get this working is to create that same "signons" on all machines. Then you can assign specific permissions to the signons on the local machine(server with the files to share). When someone uses that signon on their machine, they should automatically have access with the correct permissions on the server machine.

I have to admit, I haven't actually done this with a win 7 to win 7 connection, but I know it works for me perfectly between Win 7 and Win XP, and also between Linux (Samba) and Win 7....and also Linux and Win XP.

Let me make sure I understand what your saying
I have server01, PC01 and PC02. I need to define the userid for PC01 and the userid for PC02 on server01? That seems unworkable because ultimelate I have about 15 computers that need varying levels of security server01. I would end up with 15 signins to server01, Can that be right?

If your doing something like that then won't the best bet be Domain Server..

With Windows 7 REG and Windows XP regular.. You basically get READ/WRITE READ yada yada...

If you have to be very specific then you may need to put them on a domain server or go through the policy settings per user.

What I am needing to do is give PC01 read access to he folder and PC02 read/write to the folder. Can I do that without a domain, just a homegroup?

Homegroup won't work... Only if all machines have Windows 7 installed... Not available to previous versions of windows


You want to give special permissions to computers depending on which computer access the folder.

That can be done by Policies... if you have Windows 7 Professional and Up

or you can put the user accounts on the windows 7 machine.. so when you

For instance:
If you want to share computer A and Computer B with different sharing permissions

You add User Computer A and Computer B to windows 7 machine...
When you share the folder on the 7 machine, you can define the permissions that way.
