Win7 Chkdsk = An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 3f1)

When i run Chkdsk C: /F in Windows 7 i get 'An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 3f1)'

This has been covered on here before and many solutions have been offered.

Remove recently installed software
Run Chkdsk from safe mode
Run sfc /scannow
Use Win7 repair disk
and last but not least a full re-install

If chkdsk c: /f is run on the pc now after reboot. When you expect to see the chkdsk window appear, the machine boots into Windows 7.

Has anyone had this or has any idea of a fix ?

Booting from a Windows 7 rescue disc made on another pc seem to pick D: as the volume to repair rather than C:

Well we've run the chkdsk after booting from the repair disc and now the 'An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 3f1)' occurs once more if a chkdsk is run.
