Win7 dropped activation

This was strange. After a fresh install via DVD I had to phone in to get a laptop activated. Once I got the code Windows accepted it instantly and pronounced the install Activated.

I went ahead and did a bunch of automated updates via local store. When I came back this morning I found that Windows was now DE-activated! I had to go through the entire phone process again.

I'm wondering if the new anti-piracy update has something to do with this. And I hope it doesn't happen again, especially on the machine described here.

For what it's worth, this was possibly caused by driver updates - most likely the Ethernet driver or WLAN driver (or both).
If the system is now fully updated, then with any luck it will never happen again :)

Ok, here it is.

If this was caused by a mere network adapter update - and yes, all drivers were updated on this machine - not only does that seem very weird, it presents a quandary. I like to get the Activation behind me before I invest a lot of time updating a system. If this is the case, I will have to reverse the order, which I will not like to do. And wouldn't this mean that every machine that dares to update drivers may have the same problem?

I almost always wait on activation until I have all available updates installed - then activate, and go back and pick up any new ones I want/need.
I'm still working out how to approach Windows 8 installation/activation, since it likes to insist on activation as soon as connected to the internet, :(
