Win7 Folder off the visible desktop but is accessible

I have some folders that are not visible on the Desktop, but I can select and open them. Essentially, my computer thinks my screen is wider than it actually is....

For example, I have a folder called "Receipts". I press the letter "R" to move through all the items on my desktop that start with the letter R. The selection goes off screen (selecting the Receipts folder).... I press Enter and it opens the off-screen folder.

Through Windows Explorer, I can see the file. I haven't changed any attributes to the folder (i.e. hidden); it is obviously not hidden, as I am able to select it.

This affects more than one folder.

I run a single monitor and use Fences (just mentioning for full disclosure)

Thoughts?

Thank you
Steve

Opps... might have helped if I provided all the details.

I ran the AVG Performance Boost (Turbo mode) with the thought that it would help with gaming.

It turned off various programs that weren’t needed and made some changes to my desktop… I do not recall the specific options as I am not currently at my home computer, but it had something to do with the desktop.

Anyway, I did not like what it did, so I turned it off. This is when the folders (I think there are only two… unsure if there are icons out there also) fell off the edge of the screen. All the other icons, which were nicely organized in fences, ended up in a bit of a messy pile on the left side of the screen.

I will also mention that in the past (i.e. 10 months ago) I did run two monitors… haven’t used it since then as two 24” monitors pointing at me in a dark room seemed to be a bit much. Don’t think this plays into it, but I don’t want to go down a path where someone is saying “why didn’t you tell us about that?”

Thanks
Steve

One other note to make sure I am clearly communicating what is happening.

When I press the letter "R" in my example to toggle through all the folders/icons that start with "R" and it goes to the off screen folder called Receipts, I pressed Enter to open the folder, it does open the folder on the screen where I can see it. Just the folder (not open) is off the screen.

I checked out the link you provided. That is actually the solution for a window that opens off screen and you are trying to get it on screen. My issue is that the closed folder is off screen... I am able to navigate to it using the keyboard and pressing enter to open it on screen.

I will try playing with the resolution to see if I can get it to work. Fingers crossed.

Not successful.

I reduced resolution and poked around the desktop... no change.

Went through all the desktop options for icons (changed sorting, refresh, etc.) with no luck.

The quest continues.

I agree with CLassicD to try a System Restore.
If that doesn't work out, from your post#3, this could be causing issues that need a clean re-install

Optimziers, Registry Cleaners, etc. often cause more problems than they fix.
No telling what changes these programs really do ...

how many folders/icons you have on the desktop? if not 100's try this:
1 - right click on empty desktop
2 - go to "view"
3 - select "auto arrange icons"
***please note this will arrange all the icons on your desktop to be on the left side of the screen
