Hi everyone.
I would bet this has been asked before, BUT ...

How can I remove the excessive amount of Fonts in Windows 7? There are many that I have attempted to delete, but I am given the message that it is not possible to remove them. :confused:Why is this, and is there a Fix? After all, fonts are a memory-eater!

Thanks.

Fonts don't use any memory, they just sorta lay on your drive until called upon for use. They take up very little space as well.

Go to Control Panel>Fonts, select the font you don't want. At the top of the window should be a Delete option, click it and *poof* it's gone. :)
Some items may not display properly however.

Hi! Bertison, welcome to 7F :)

Most likely the reason you can not delete certain fonts is they are the default fonts (System Fonts) that Windows needs in order to properly display the results of your input from your keyboard.

It is also necessary for communication with third-party programs, and the Internet.

A quick look in the tutorial section here at 7F:

Be careful what you do delete. I noticed recently that all my web pages were in italics and when I checked the Fonts folder the Arial Italic font was nowhere to be seen.

In the end, I copied the font from one of my networked computers and pasted it into my Fonts folder.

Personally, I'd be inclined to leave the Fonts folder alone. Sod's law says that as soon as you delete a font you'll need it.

In general, I agree with you. On the other hand, note that the page I linked to only moves the fonts to a different folder - they are always there for you to copy back if you ever feel the need.

I have used this for many months on many computers and it seemed to work. Your mileage may vary, though ...

Fonts are NOT a memory-eater as you put it, unless they are used. Otherwise, they just sit on your hard drive doing nothing and taking up very little space. Don't obsess over a non-issue.

Actually even if you remove them you WILL NOT reclaim that space used by them. You will only remove one hardlink reference to the font. It will continue to take up space until all hardlink references are deleted. So you save NOTHING.

Well, for me the motivation was not disk space or memory (I have plenty of both).
The issue was that in most applications, the list of fonts becomes very large. I have many additional fonts installed, and it is very irritating to scroll through large font lists filled with fonts that I will never use, to get to the ones that I want.

If you do have such an annoyance, the solution I pointed to works. Otherwise, as many of you have pointed out - don't fix it if it ain't broke.
