Each day I have my SSD do an image backup to the other drive in my laptop. Once in a while, the backup fails with the error that I cannot back up to a drive that the system boots to or is installed on. The fix is to restore the prior days image (I keep the data on a separate drive).... Anyone else get this issue???
No installs occured.... Just normal use. Had this happen a couple times now.

A separate partition on your hard drive? or an external hard drive?
Make sure the drive isn't active. Right click computer and click on manage and go to disk utilities. Make sure it is a logical, or external drive, not an active one
btw, nice monitor display-65" lol

Separate drive (spinning) than the SSD. Works fine for weeks, then suddenly the message. Odd.

Big budget (its good to be the king):o

hmm, I cannot really think of any reason on the top of my head about why the image backup would fail...
Perhaps, you can try going to cmd as administrator and scanning your system files (sfc /scannow) but i have a feeling isn't because of that. My guess is that it is something to do with the external hard drive's configuration itself. Have you tried reformating the hdd? If you have another hdd, you can copy the files to that other hdd and format this one over (ntfs). However, the bad thing about doing this is also with an image backup bug where moving or deleting the image backup folder will show an inaccurate folder size estimate.....
I hope i helped? lol
sorry >.<

lightningltd, I have seen errors while trying to back up my SSD too. Just when using certain drives, in my case it was the drive I was using to write the backup. Once I switched to a 7200RPM drive, it quit. I was getting the errors using a 5400 RPM drive....I don't know if this helps, but maybe writing from an SSD to a slow 5400RPM drive causes errors once in a while.

That drive is a 7200RPM drive,, so that won't be it.
But, I have seen Windows Backup have different issues.

I generally recommend Acronis.

However,, with that said,,, it very well still could be an issue of backing up an SSD to an HDD issue.

One of the nice things about Acronis is you can setup the priority of the backup among other things. Might help with slowing it down if it's a speed issue between the reads/writes of the different speed drives. Or get another SSD and see if the problem persists.

The fix to the bug is simple.... (now that I found the issue)...
You will only see the bug in rare circumstances. U need to go into drive manager, assign the hidden partition a drive letter, then go into the drive and remove the system volume directory, then remove the drive letter.
For some wierd reason, backup uses this hidden partition when doing an image backup and 'forgets' to remove the temp stuff it put there.:hot:
