Win7 image backup

I am using the image backup on an HP laptop (dv7) that has a recovery partition (E) as well as the OS (C). When I do the image backup the recovery partition gets selected along with the OS partition and it CANNOT be deselected.

Is there someway to deselect E:? I like using the built in image backup in Win 7 but I really don't need to write the recovery partition every time I do an image backup.

Sorry, but no you cannot deselect the C: and System Reserved partition for the System Image. These are both required for Windows 7 to run properly if restored from the image backup.

You might give the program Macrium Reflect Free Edition a try to see how it works for you though. It will allow you to select which one to backup or not.

Hi Ted,

He's referring to the System Reserved and C: (Windows 7) partition that have their check mark option grayed out, and not able to uncheck them. Since they are both required to run Windows 7, that is why they are selected by default and cannot be unchecked. It's Microsoft's way of making sure that you will have a backup image that will work. That's all.

I was referring the the Recovery partition put there by HP when they ship a new computer so you can restore it to the factory condition. It along with the 2 partitions for the OS are selected. I wanted to have the two for the OS selected but I can't see any reason to keep backing up the Recovery Partition (I also have made dvds so I can restore from them).
Sorry I did not make myself clear.

We knew what you meant but Windows 7 will automatically select (gray out) the recovery partition also, that's just how it's set up. Just as it grays out my Vista as it's the "system partition" and that's where the system boot files are.

Sorry, and I accept the way the program works and I will just back it up every month. I actually have a copy of Ghost 15 but there have been so many people complaining about it messing up their systems(and you need to load 32bit drivers to restore) that I wanted something very easy to use and the windows 7 backup seems to meet our needs. I will just take it as it is. Thanks for your help.
