The Microsoft link turns me down because the serial number I have is OEM, and therefore I should contact the OEM. They say that I should make a copy of the OS using bloatware that came pre installed with the PC when I bought it.

When you tried ThrashZone suggestion did you use the COA key found on the Microsoft Sticker that look something like this?

The product key is a string of 25 characters.

I'm trying to figure out why the Microsoft site didn't like them.

No it wasn't.
Is the OEM from using a key finder which would end up showing a OEM/SLP key used by the manufacture, which will not work.
Or is it the OEM key found on the Microsoft sticker. Two completely different OEM keys.

I know that Microsoft will refuse the OEM/SLP key but I don't know if they will refuse the key on their own sticker.

Does it matter? Both of those will give you the same response from Microsoft, they are still OEM keys.

Because I have read many post the state their OEM key doesn't work but none of the post that I read stated where they got the OEM key from. Did the key come from the MGADiag log or maybe a keyfinder or the Microsoft sticker. All three place would be OEM but the sticker would be a different key number. I don't know if the sticker key number works or not.

I not understanding why the Microsoft sticker key doesn't work for these reasons.

If one has OEM Builders or Retail keys they would not need the download because like me they would already have the DVD that comes with the keys.

So I'm thinking the Microsoft download must be meant for those that bought a pre installed system and they should be able to use the COA key off the Microsoft sticker on the computer. Why else would Microsoft have that download site?

OEM Builders people already have a Windows 7 DVD that came with a COA key.
Retail people already have a Windows 7 DVD that came with a COA key.

The sticker is still a key related to that OEM is it not? It is just a specific key for that machine, as opposed to the OEM SLP which you know doesn't work for anything but the manufacturer.

I just don't see the confusion myself, Microsoft knows that COA key is from an OEM.

Yes, there is a difference, I'm not disputing that. MS is not accepting any keys from the OEM's to download.

The exception, has been some system builder OEM's have been able to download.

Of course Microsoft know what the key is from.

Lets try it another way.
If a OEM Builders key come with a DVD and a Retail key come with a DVD how what is left.

Let me guess.
It's the people with a store bought system that is activated with a OEM/SLP key but also has a different OEM key on the Microsoft sticker but they have no DVD with Windows 7.

Out of the three users, OEM builders, Retail or store bought computers which one needs the Microsoft download.
OEM Builders don't need the download.
Retail don't need the download.
Only the people who have a store bought computer with a pre installed Windows 7 need the download. The Microsoft download must be meant for them. If that is true I don't understand why the Microsoft sticker key doesn't work.
I'm trying to verify that it doesn't work. The ones that fail might be getting the key from the wrong place.

This information might just come in hand for people that have store bought computers with Windows 7 pre installed.
