Win7 Memorize folder views

I take a lot of pictures so being able to customize the Pictures folder is crucial to me.

In the Pictures folder I have sub folders such as 2008, 2009 etc.
Within those I have other sub folder such as Jan, Feb, Mar etc.
So a typical folder tree would look like:
Libraries>Pictures>My Pictures>2009>January.

I want to see Large Icons at the "January" level but Medium Icons at the
2008, 2009 level.

Every time I change the folder view for the actual pictures inside the
Pictures>2009>Jan (for example) it also changes the Pictures>2009
to that very same view.

It never does this with any other folders and their sub-folders anywhere else in my computer.

How can I make the Pictures folders and their sub-folders memorize my preferred views independently?

Hello Aperture, and welcome to Seven Forums.

In a Library, all folders share the same folder view setting. Only normal Windows Explorer windows have independent folder views.

Instead, you might open the "My Pictures" folder from the Start Menu under your (user name) button on the dark right side. This way they will have their own folder view settings.

No, but you can pin the C:\Users\(user-name)\My Pictures folder to the Start Menu or taskbar directly though.

I did what you suggest in the "pin to start menu".
The whole thing now works perfectly fine.

By the way what's the deal with Libraries in general?
Why are they doing this?
Why not just go directly to the My Documents?
They could even keep the My Music and My Pictures at the same level as My Docs if they wanted to but I don't understand why bother with Libraries.
I doubt I'll ever use it since I can't customize the views as much as going directly to the My Docs.

You're most welcome Aperture. I'm happy to hear that you got them sorted.

Libraries behave this way because they are not normal individual folders. They allow you to access multiple folder locations at one place (the library) without the files being actually stored in the library. For example, your "My Music" folder will only show you what files you have in it, but the "Music" library can show you files from any folder that you include in the library from any location. Instead of having to go to each of these different folder locations to access your music files, you can just go the one "Music" library to do so instead.

Brink- you said that you can pin "My Pictures" to the taskbar- right clicking on My Pictures does not give a "pin to" option so I assume you mean a "stack" using the new toolbar procedure?- but can you create an icon shortcut on the left? I have followed your tutorial to do this for User Documents- is there a path that i can type using this procedure to achieve this for My Pictures, and for that matter My Videos etc etc? Thank you.

If you press and hold Shift + right click on the user folder (ex: My Pictures), you will then see a Pin to Start Menu option.

Thanks very much for quick answer Brink but afraid not- when I do that "pin to start menu" is just not on the list, nor is pin to task bar (which is the one I want). The only times they appear is for programs on the start menu but it's a shortcut to individual folders (other than My Documents, which I've now got by following the tutorial) that I want. Any other ideas (anyone)?- I was hoping that I could be given paths or command lines or whatever they're called to use in the "add my documents" tutorial to make that system work for individual folders.

Brink I'm afraid i'm missing this point as well (shift plus right click pinning)???? Not working for me as well. Is it only for certain folders or any folder?

Just tried it again, still not working. I have the upgrade retail version of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

LOL, sorry, but you will need to enable this first. I forgot it was not enabled by default in Windows 7.

That's brilliant Brink, but in your second post on this thread you referred to pinning to the task bar (as well as the start menu) and it's that that I'm trying to do- i've done it for My Docs as per the tutorial but is it possible for the other user folders such as Pictures, Videos etc? Thank you very much.

Yes, you can do it with any folder. You would pin a folder to the taskbar by adding the folder as a toolbar instead.
