Win7?, or the lappie?, or the router? Equals no Internet

A Dell XPS i7 laptop, Win7 up to date, running quite well in all respects. OK, bar one!

No internet connection. Why?

The D-Link 111 router lights look good: DSL is rock steady. WAN blinks. Internet blinks. All as normal.

Putting a wire between the router & Dell lights the router port LED. AND, ipconfig.exe shows a proper IPV4 address dished out to the Dell by the router. BUT, cannot open the admin system on the router as 192.168.1.1 will not connect in Chrome nor in IE.

Win7 Network & Sharing shows a connect from Dell to router but 'X' from router to Internet. AND, ping to the router gives general failure. BUT, arp -a shows the router address as expected.

A second router is found and gives the same behaviour, but this 2nd router is known to be OK.

Take the 'bad' router next door and wire-connect it to another PC and everything works fine. Admin shows all is well inside the bad router.

Have I missed something? Is the Dell faulty?

Could you copy and paste the output of your ipconfig /all for further analysis? It seems to be a DNS or default gateway issue.

Thanks for the info--do me a favor. When you ping 127.0.0.1 do you still get the "General failure." message?

It seems that there is a problem with the TCP/IP stack installed on your computer. Let me know your results above and we'll go ahead with the next step.

Copy and paste the above in to Notepad and save it as Flush.bat to the desktop. Close all running applications and then right-click on the file and choose to run as an administrator, providing the necessary credentials when prompted. Your computer will automatically restart itself.

Thanks D822 & Dwarf - the 127.0.0.1 yields general failure - and I'll run the FLUSH.BAT tomorrow as the laptop is now out of range for the night.

You don't happen to have McAfee as your antivirus, do you? Heard there was a problem with a McAfee update over the past weekend that messed with everyone's internet connection.

Dwarf's flush.bet did not solve this problem, but thanks.

Thanks SM3 - Yes fully subscribed McAfee is the security system on the Dell. I have looked at https://community.mcafee.com/thread/47768?start=40&tstart=0 and seen the legion of problems and the supposed solution - complete uninstall / re-install. So that is the next step.

The Dell will be traveling for a week and I'll report when the procedure has been carried out.
